“All Saints” is a film that feels like a small miracle. An inspirational film inspired by a true story that allows its dramatic moments to unfold naturally rather than relying on over-the-top dramatic flourishes. “All Saints” isn’t preachy or heavy-handed when it comes to the power of prayer and signs from God, which may make it more accessible than other films of its ilk to viewers from a wide range of religious backgrounds than other films in the same genre (or lack thereof).

With a subtle approach, director Steve Gomer depicts dire and potentially devastating situations, allowing the purity of their prevailing humanity to come through. Highs and lows, hopes and disappointments, highs and lows, highs and lows abound in this story of a rural church that came back from the brink of collapse about a decade ago. However, the material is kept emotionally grounded by a well-chosen cast, which is led by a tremendously appealing John Corbett.

Editor’s Picks

As Michael Spurlock, Corbett portrays a former paper salesman who has recently decided to follow his calling and become a pastor. The diocese assigns him and his family to All Saints Episcopal Church in Smyrna, Tennessee, which is located just outside of Nashville, for his first significant assignment. The church is in financial trouble, and its membership is dwindling; Michael has been assigned to inventory the property and oversee its sale in order to make way for a big-box store development project.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this All Saints quiz.

In order to keep his dissatisfied son, Atticus (Myles Moore), happy, Michael tells him that it will only be “a couple of months,” while his former journalist wife, Aimee (Carey Buono), tries to make the most of the situation by starting a choir with her friends. The family is met with suspicion by the locals, who are led by a cantankerous Vietnam veteran (a perfectly cast Barry Corbin), who does not exactly welcome them with open arms. A Capra-like change of heart is clearly in store for everyone, otherwise there would be no film. However, the road to get there isn’t nearly as straightforward as you might expect from the script written by Steve Armour from the beginning.

“All Saints” may appear to be a bit of a sitcom at first glance, given the way it affectionately plays up the folksiness of these small-town people. It’s clear that Gomer has a long history of directing dramatic television, as evidenced by the pacing and unfussy camerawork in some scenes. Moreover, it’s clear that Michael was a bit arrogant and insubordinate in his previous career, which threatens to manifest itself in his newer, more humble profession and set the stage for a bizarre culture clash. However, as the story begins to settle into a rhythm and its central conflict develops, it becomes unexpectedly compelling to read.

A week before the church is scheduled to be demolished, dozens of Burmese refugees fleeing the war-torn country arrive. He and his colleagues are ethnic Karen farmers with little money and nowhere to go, and their leader, the kind and thoughtful Ye Win (played superbly by Nelson Lee), is one of the few people who can communicate in English. Within a short period of time, Michael believes he has heard the voice of God instructing him to fight for All Saints by allowing Karen to remain and farm the land surrounding the church, providing them with food and shelter while also generating much-needed income for the church.

About the quiz

Those around him, including his boss, the no-nonsense bishop, are perplexed as to whether Michael is truly hearing the voice of God and not just the sound of his own savior complex (Gregory Alan Williams). One of many instances in which characters question the will of God and their own faith in conversations that are refreshingly honest, direct, and heartfelt can be found throughout the series.

Michael and his team encounter a number of difficulties while putting their plan to plant tomatoes, corn, and other vegetables into action, and even some of their victories prove to be fleeting in nature. However, they are able to survive because of the strength of their community—which may sound cheesy, but Gomer’s wise restraint makes it ring true.

Corbett is also able to strike the perfect tone in any situation, whether it’s charmingly swaggering or quietly searching for answers. Despite the fact that the two have excellent chemistry (as well as a pleasant “Northern Exposure” reunion), Corbin steals every scene he is in, whether he’s ranting or serving as a wise and experienced voice of reason. Furthermore, in her role as Michael’s wife, Buono is given the opportunity to demonstrate spine and shading rather than simply serving as the dutiful, supportive spouse.

As an added touch of authenticity, “All Saints” was filmed on location at the real All Saints church in Smyrna, with several real-life parishioners appearing as themselves in the film. Moreover, if this small, sweet film helps to open people’s eyes to the importance of welcoming refugees in need—especially at a time when notions of rejecting them are unfortunately taking hold—then that is just an added bonus.
