A more deft hand than the one displayed by director Nima Nourizadeh, whose previous feature was the found-footage, high-school pukefest “Project X,” is required in order to mix genres as disparate as the ones that are featured in this film. The production values of “American Ultra” are significantly higher than those of the earlier film, but so are the production values of the typical wedding video. Despite this, the film is just as brutal. However, the screenplay that was written by Max Landis (“Chronicle”) begins with all of the gloomy and depressing trappings of your typical low-key independent film set in a small town.

Mike Howell, portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, is a stoner with long hair who works at a desolate and remote West Virginia convenience store that is in a vivid state of disrepair. His sole objective in life is to pop the question to his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart), who works as a bail bondsman and with whom he shares a bong, a house, and a future that he hopes will include a lifetime together. Mike is aware that he does not deserve her (and for a while, it is a wonder why she stays with him, given that he is not much to her), and one of the few charming running gags involves his inability to find just the right time to pop the question. [Case in point:] Mike is unable to find just the right time to pop the question.

The next evening, while he was working, he was at the checkout counter when an odd woman approached him, said some strange things to him while she was purchasing a cup of soup, and then left. Suddenly, he realizes that he has the ability to quickly kill two bad guys who come at him in the parking lot with the spoon from the aforementioned soup, which the strange woman left behind. He does this by using the spoon to stab them both in the back. It turns out that Mike is a highly trained operative from an old government program, and that woman (Connie Britton) was a CIA agent who came to activate him in the hopes of keeping him alive. Both of these revelations were a surprise to everyone.

And now it makes perfect sense that “American Ultra” takes place in a town called Liman, West Virginia; perhaps it is an homage to Doug Liman’s “The Bourne Identity,” with some druggy nuggets from one of the director’s earliest films, “Go.” Mike is a killing machine and he never knew it, piecing together in his mind the lethal skills and high-tech information he never realized he had. He is similar to the amnesiac Jason Bourne.

The plans he has for his engagement could be derailed as a result of this. Or is it going to? Even as the dangerous situations and bloody action sequences become more intense and elaborate, “American Ultra” makes an effort to keep the early, yearning vibe of its young, desperate lovers. This is despite the fact that the film features increasingly intense and elaborate action sequences. Eisenberg and Stewart, who co-starred in the 2009 drama comedy “Adventureland,” have an easy, lived-in chemistry with each other, even as the stakes increase; however, it is difficult to accept Eisenberg as a character who is lacking in wit and ambition. Stewart and Eisenberg co-starred in the 2009 drama comedy “Adventureland.” His most impressive performances have been in movies like “The Squid and the Whale” and “The Social Network,” in which he played the role of the most knowledgeable character in the space.

In addition, a plethora of supporting players are going to waste because they are trapped in frustrating one-note roles. Britton brings sophistication and intelligence to her role as an experienced agent who is willing to go rogue for the greater good, whereas Topher Grace’s performance as her much younger superior, who is only looking out for himself, is singularly snarling and sniveling. The performance of John Leguizamo as a tatted and slang-speaking drug dealer is grating. As Britton’s longtime colleague, Tony Hale has very little to do besides act meek and subordinate throughout the show. Walton Goggins, playing the role of an arsonist-turned-operative named Laugher, has one genuine moment of connection with Eisenberg but is otherwise maniacal throughout the majority of the film. And Bill Pullman makes an appearance as the mysterious overlord of everyone for no more than two minutes, at the most.

However, the fact of the matter is that all of their efforts to kill Mike or keep him alive seem rather pointless, as they culminate in a wildly bloody and explosive conclusion that takes place in a discount superstore, which features a few clever ideas. Since the beginning, we have known that Mike will be all right. The entirety of the movie is a series of flashbacks that take place while he is sitting chained to an interrogation table. Despite being cut and bruised, he is still whole, which robs the entire endeavor of any genuine tension. It’s possible that they’re banking on the fact that you’ll be in an altered state when you watch the movie and that you won’t remember any of that information from the beginning.
