“American Underdog,” which is based on the quarterback’s autobiography of the same name, has a distinct, at times kooky vibe that’s appealing, even if its cause-and-effect narrative doesn’t explain how Warner managed to break into the National Football League by entering through channels that were far outside the norm and at a much older age than was customary. Put another way, the film makes it appear as though Warner progressed from being an undrafted free agent to playing arena football for the St. Louis Rams and winning Super Bowl XXXIV primarily on the basis of being a decent and devout guy who treats his loved ones well and performs the tedious, necessary tasks of daily life even when he doesn’t feel like it. It is possible that professional sports teams all over the world would be staffed exclusively with nice, caring people, many of whom would be out of shape, if this were the case.
It doesn’t matter. Because the film was adapted and directed by Andrew and John Erwin, who are known for making very successful films for the American Christian market (such as “Mom’s Night Out” and “I Can Only Imagine”), the film’s focus and messaging are consistent with that of the Erwins’ previous work. In this film, we learn about virtue, commitment, and faith, and how, if you possess and diligently maintain those characteristics, good things will happen to you, if not immediately, then eventually.
The focus of “American Underdog” is on Kurt (Zachary Levi), his future wife Brenda, and their relationship, despite the fact that the film contains plenty of football action (there are several sequences done on an appropriately grand scale) (Anna Paquin). Their paths first cross in the early 1990s, when Kurt, a former college football player at the University of Northern Iowa, is working at a grocery store and sending VHS highlight reels to recruiters, and Brenda, an Army veteran, is raising Zack (Hayden Zaller), who is legally blind and brain-damaged as a result of the abandonment of her cheating husband, when they first meet. Surprisingly, the early emphasis is on the developing relationship between Kurt and Brenda, and that’s where the story stays for the most part.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this American Underdog quiz.
Despite the fact that Levi and Paquin are far too old to convincingly portray their characters at this stage of their lives (Levi is 41 and Paquin is 38), and despite the fact that they have been fitted with unflattering wigs, their chemistry is excellent and they are both exceptional actors, so it’s not difficult to look past all of that. Perhaps the most admirable aspect of the film is its refusal to move in accordance with the prescribed rhythms of the standard sports film. From the beginning to the end, it prefers to concentrate on what is going on off the field. Only when it’s time to set up the next career milestone does it return to the gridiron, and those milestones are only important insofar as they have an impact on the lives of Kurt, Brenda, and Zack, respectively. “American Underdog” is a film about a couple who grows up together, gets to know each other, and watches out for each other. According to some, this is a first in the world of sports films. The hero’s partner is frequently reduced to the role of a supportive figure on the sidelines in this genre (or a constantly crying person who wants him to stop playing for health reasons).

The film opens with a lengthy scene in which Kurt, who met Brenda at a local honkytonk club, arrives at Brenda’s house to deliver a single red rose only to discover that she is not present. Zack walks him into the house and takes his hand in his. Brenda’s mother, who lives in the house, discovers Kurt and Zack lying side by side on the kitchen floor (because that’s what Zack wants them to do), and she calls the authorities. He must be here to see Brenda, and she is not concerned that he is an intruder because, after all, why would an intruder lie on his back on the kitchen floor next to a blind child? The scene is so bizarre (in an appealing way) that it could only have occurred in real life, and there are numerous scenes like it, including one set during an icy winter in which the family’s car runs out of fuel on an interstate highway and Kurt is forced to abandon them and walk for several miles to fill a gas can and then walk all the way back to his family. What does this have to do with football, you might wonder. Nothing, but it’s the kind of thing that happens all the time and that you never see depicted in a motion picture.

The problem, however, is that “American Underdog” never really connects Kurt and Brenda’s modest virtuousness to Kurt’s meteoric rise to the position of starting quarterback in the NFL. In terms of sports movies, what distinguishes this one is the emphasis on the central relationship, and you could even argue that you could make the exact same movie about a man who drove a bus or managed a shoe store and went on to win bus driver of the year or shoe store manager of the year, provided that you could secure the necessary funding for a project of this nature (a big “if”). Sadly, even if the point were that this person entered the profession and rose to great heights despite not being the type of person who would normally be within shouting distance of such a dream, you’d still need to give audiences a sense of the qualities that enabled him to break through, rather than simply repeating over and over again, “He was a nice guy who believed in God and was good to his girlfriend and her son.”
About the quiz
This is frustrating, even though I realize that is the point of making a movie for this specific segment of the entertainment market, and I have no idea how one would go about making a film like this. In addition, the fact that football does not care whether or not its players are good people could serve as the basis for a film about faith and values.
