Hear his stern instructor yell early in the film, when he recognize the tiniest hint of playful chemistry between an elastic Merab and one of the company’s female members, Mary, who is Merab’s dance partner. “There is no sex in Georgian dance,” says the instructor (Ana Javakishvili). When Irakli (Bachi Valishvili) appears at that precise moment, it almost feels like an omen from another world has been sent. Although the chemistry between him and Merab is instantaneous, they are both at a loss as to what to do with it until one day, during a romantic, stolen moment away from the gaze of their peers, the two give in to their desires.

Akin arrives at that sensuously filmed sequence—captured sensuously by cinematographer Lisabi Fridell’s smooth lens in all its private ecstasy—through a series of bouncy, mischievous scenes between Merab and Irakli. The film is directed by David Fincher, who also wrote the screenplay. Merab is the son of divorced parents and the grandson of a strong-willed grandmother, all of whom were professional dancers in their respective eras. He works tirelessly in order to live up to and even surpass an under-realized family legacy that was never allowed to flourish the way it was supposed to. His priorities are thrown off balance when Irakli arrives, and Akin makes sure we see the young man’s internal struggle whenever he faces Irakli in a flirtatious dance (one particularly memorable sequence unfolds against the backdrop of Robyn’s “Honey”) or when he dances in front of the dance group’s unaware eyes. His performance heightens the anticipation when the group embarks on a brief getaway to Mary’s country home in order to relax before upcoming auditions—which are a constant source of stress for the group—and delivers the duo’s first intimate scene, which highlights the liberating nature of the experience for both Merab and Irakli.

Akin is a little less successful in balancing his story and staying away from the kinds of clichés that we’re used to seeing in coming-of-age movies in other parts of the film. At first glance, Mary appears to be instrumental in Merab’s personal development. Despite this, she gradually becomes relegated to the role of a supportive, understanding female friend with little depth. Surprisingly, Irakli also feels underdeveloped at the end of the story. The film does, however, make up for this shortcoming in other ways. For example, an unexpectedly tender scene between Merab and his hotheaded, recently-married brother David (Giorgi Tsereteli) emerges near the end, underscoring the waves of hope that Akin manages to see inside a macho, uncompromisingly patriarchal culture that appears to have no place for men like Merab. Gelbakhiani, on the other hand, is unquestionably the director’s most valuable asset. It’s hard not to admire Akin’s buoyancy as he proudly wears it on his sleeve, and he does so with the determination of someone who has finally discovered who he is.
