Scott “Ant-Man” “Ant-Man” “Ant-Man” Despite the fact that Lang is a superhero, his accomplishments are all so heavily qualified—mostly because he never manages to save the day without alienating his friends and loved ones—that his sense of self-worth is constantly reduced to the level of a regular person.

Every time Lang attempts to puff out his chest, he is reminded of his character-defining flaws, which serves as a constant reminder throughout the messy, but ultimately satisfying super-sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” During that one instance, Lang (Paul Rudd) aided Captain America—but only after stealing a shrinking super-suit from his reluctant mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). However, in “Captain America: Civil War,” he saved the world without consulting his training or his romantic interest, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly). He’s launching his own security company in San Francisco, but he’s still under strict house arrest, which is being closely monitored. “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” like writer Nick Spencer’s recent run on the Ant-Man comics, portrays Lang as a hapless but well-intentioned youngster who tries, but frequently fails, to live up to expectations.

Editor’s Picks

A superhero movie’s generic flaw may be macho pride, but “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a rarity in that it is a super-film in which actions have consequences and the characters overcome their ego-driven tendencies long enough to work together as a ragtag team. The film’s supporting characters, including smug weapons dealer Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins), mysterious super-villain Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), clueless FBI agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), and Pym’s estranged former colleague Dr. Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne), frequently throw Lang and Pym off their best-laid plans, particularly their shared goal of obtaining the equipment that Pym needs to rescue his long-missing wife Janet (

The most endearing aspect of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is the way Lang’s story is told in a discursive, tangent-filled manner. In Lang’s world, well-meaning outsiders—here, ex-wife Maggie (Judy Greer) and her amiable wet blanket husband Paxton (Bobby Cannavale), as well as Lang’s eager-to-please daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson)—as well as neurotic colleagues, such as Lang’s “X-Con” security crew team of Kurt (David Dastmalchian), Dave (T.I.) Several of these characters are also struggling to overcome their own tendency to over-analyze situations: if Ghost does not steal and activate Pym’s equipment immediately, she will perish; if Pym does not enlist Lang’s assistance in retrieving his equipment, his wife will vanish; and if Lang does not return to his home before Woo arrives to check on him, his new post-“Ant-Man” life will be over.

Fortunately, director Peyton Reed (“Bring It On,” “Down with Love”) and the film’s five credited screenwriters successfully (if not always gracefully) juggle the film’s many plot threads. Despite the fact that they don’t develop every thread, they do follow through with enough subplots and ideas that the majority of moviegoers will be at least superficially invested in the characters by the time “Ant-Man and the Wasp” eventually devolves into a series of well-choreographed action sequences.

Although there are several scenes in the film’s first half that do not contribute to Lang’s character development, Reed and his writers do a good job of moving the film’s chaotic plot forward. At various points during these early scenes, Lang appears to have lost control of his super-suit, leading him to act and behave like a sullen, Peter Parker-like adolescent. He also behaves in some ways like a relatively mature caregiver who enjoys caring for his daughter and who sighs heavily whenever he is unable to independently solve his domestic problems on his own. However, it is arguable that “Ant-Man and the Wasp” does not go far enough in attempting to reconcile the disparity between these two opposing aspects of Lang’s personality.

About the quiz

Speaking of personality, the first half of “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which is the portion of the film that is most reliant on plot-pushing expository dialogue, has the distinct impression of having been put together by a creative committee that includes five credited writers. This minor, but notable flaw is one of the reasons why I spent the majority of this review praising the film’s characters and ideas rather than its traditional narrative structure and structure. This film, like many others produced by Marvel Studios, is occasionally marred by uninspired cinematography (by Dante Spinotti, who happens to be Michael Mann’s regular director of photography!) and over-edited set pieces (as is the case with many Marvel Studios films).

However, this is only true on occasion. As soon as its creators stop focusing on setting up their shaggy dog plot and start focusing on plugging in their better ideas into dynamic car chases, fight scenes, and comedic routines, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” really takes off (I especially love the bit where Lang, after being knocked out and tied up, asks his kidnapper to help him video-chat with Cassie).

Reed and his colleagues take super-fans on a long, strange journey with some of the most sympathetic cinematic crime-fighters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the better part of two hours. The film “Ant-Man and the Wasp” may not be the best thing ever, but it is, like its perpetually challenged hero, more than adequate in every way.
