When people ask me what “Aquaman” is like, I always point them to a scene early in the film where opposing Atlantean forces square off and debate the future of the kingdom. One side rides armored seahorses that whinny, while the other rides a chariot. The other rides on the backs of armored sharks who roar. In the same way that “SpongeBob Squarepants” is concerned with scientific accuracy, so is “Aquaman.” And that’s just one of the many reasons why I enjoy it so much.

For a film about a half-human, half-Atlantean prince known on land as Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) to be as ridiculous as this one, the filmmakers must master the art of not seeming condescending to the subject matter. “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Venom,” and both “Ant-Man” films are examples of a thriving subcategory of superhero movies directed by James Wan (“Saw,” “The Conjuring”) that is mostly devoid of the sour gloom that is mistaken for maturity. Nonetheless, this is not to say that these films aren’t serious in their own right. “Aquaman,” in particular, has the distinct impression of being both a spoof and an operatic melodrama. Anything that can combine those modes is a force to be reckoned with in the cinematic world today.

Even though Aquaman made his appearance in “Batman vs. Superman” and was a member of the ensemble in “Justice League,” this is the first time he has been given a prominent role on the big screen. The end result is entertaining enough that you may wish Warner Bros. had done it sooner rather than later. Despite the fact that it is not billed as such, this is an origin story that portrays Arthur as a reluctant hero. Arthur is a mixed-species character who, according to screenwriters David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, who adapted Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris’ source material, feels alienated from both of the civilizations he represents. In the film, he is the offspring of a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison) and an Atlantean named Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), who was stranded on a desert island and nursed back to health by Tom. Atlanna was then exiled to the sea, where she was executed for the sin of giving birth to a child who was half-human.

Arthur has long hair and tattoos, as well as a gift for witty one-liners and a penchant for beer. He has no allegiance to either land or sea. Nothing more than for him to be left alone. The idealistic Atlantean Mera (Amber Heard) persuades Arthur to unite, and he does so at a time when radical forces, led by Arthur’s treacherous half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), want to exterminate the land-dwellers as retaliation for polluting and militarizing the sea. Arthur is one of those heroes who has been certified by Joseph Campbell as being “destined for great things,” hence the mythically resonant first name. He even has a moment that is eerily similar to the one in which the future King Arthur draws Excalibur from the stone.

As is typical of big-budget superhero films, the film is overlong and repetitive at times, but its second half is more distinctive than its first because it lets its freak flag fly freely. Wan and company, on the other hand, do an excellent job of separating the algae from cliches. Rather than getting bogged down in plot specifics, they concentrate on characterization and performances, production design, costumes, and the overall look, feel, and vibe of the film in its entirety.

It is possible that you will miss some of the wonderful details in each frame on your first viewing. When the Atlanteans speak, they do so with their mouths, but there are no visible bubbles; instead, there is only vocal distortion that suggests “bubble-ness.” Instead of swimming at dolphin speeds, the characters square off as if they were standing on a sidewalk, their heads bobbing ever-so-slightly from side to side. Lighting provided by luminous deep-sea creatures, as well as cutting-edge technology inspired by aquatic animals and plants, are available to the water-dwelling population. Crab and lobster claws of various sizes adorn some of the battle armor pieces. Mera appears in one scene wearing a dress with a collar made of glowing jellyfish and a skirt made of a variety of colors of seagrass. An arena sequence begins with taiko drumming on the soundtrack, and the camera pans out to reveal a single drummer, who happens to be a gigantic octopus.

About the quiz

The fight sequences employ high-speed, 360-degree camerawork to create a sense of surprise and delight rather than to generate unnecessary excitement. We’re constantly surprised by where the action begins and ends, and there are multiple slapstick jokes woven into each encounter to keep things light and humorous. With its armored Atlantean troopers charging up onto the surface of the planet and engaging in martial arts combat with their opponents in broad daylight, “Aquaman” treats the mayhem with the same level of awe and wonder that audiences have come to expect from “Infra-man” or “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” The camera occasionally swims or flies from one location to another and back, as in a chase and fight sequence set in a Sicilian seaside town, where combatants smash through the walls of cliffside homes and scramble over tiled roofs. This sequence is the most spectacular of the film.

Momoa serves as the film’s emotional center, imbuing the big guy with a surly charm akin to one of those early Marlon Brando characters who was a jerk most of the time, but so magnetic and wounded that you couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Similarly dedicated are the rest of the cast members, particularly Kidman as Atlanna, who acts as if she’s playing the lead in an ancient Greek tragedy; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane, aka Black Manta, a pirate who vows revenge on the hero; and Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Atlantis’ counselor who advises caution and reason to no avail, and who acts as a second (aquatic) father to

The most notable aspect, however, is the way in which “Aquaman” challenges the notion that violence is the only solution to all of life’s problems. Even though there are plenty of bloody battles on land and at sea, along with laser shootouts and aquatic infantry clashes, the majority of the most important battles are resolved peacefully, through dialogue and negotiation, and forgiveness is shown. Men and women both cry in this film, and the sight of tears is not treated as a shameful loss of dignity, but rather as a natural byproduct of experiencing pain or joy. This is a quietly subversive film, despite its wild spectacle and cartoonish cleverness, and it represents an evolutionary step forward in the history of the genre.
