Every adolescent holds fast to the belief that their parents were never teenagers in the first place. It’s possible that their parents were once children themselves. They are unquestionably adults at this point. But how could they have ever been teenagers and yet be unable to communicate with and understand their own kids? This point of view is actually quite optimistic, because it assumes that being a teenager will allow you to gain valuable insight into the world of teenagers. However, the film “Back to the Future” is even more optimistic, arguing that you can travel back in time to the years when your parents were teenagers and straighten them out exactly when they need it the most.

Editor’s Picks

The film begins in the present day, with a teenager named Marty (Michael J. Fox, who previously appeared on the television show “Family Ties”). We all know his parents are hopeless nerds, so we’ll just say it. Mom guzzles vodka in the kitchen while Dad tells corny jokes, and the evening meal is akin to feeding time at the fun house. Nothing but Marty’s friendship with the insane Dr. Brown (Christopher Lloyd), an inventor with glowing eyes and hair that resembles a fright wig, keeps him sane during the film. Brown believes he has discovered the secret to time travel, and he conducts a demonstration of his invention one night in the deserted parking lot of a nearby shopping mall to prove it. No other time machine has ever existed in the long history of time travel films quite like Brown’s, which looks more or less like a modified De Lorean than it does in the film.

A series of twists and turns leads to Marty being transported back 30 years in time to a time when a shopping mall was a farmer’s field (there is a funny scene in which the farmer believes the De Lorean is a flying saucer), and then back 30 years to the present day. Marty wanders into town, still dressed in his 1985 clothes, and the locals notice his goose down jacket and inquire as to why he is wearing a life preserver on his person.

About the quiz

When it comes to the town of Emmett, one of the running gags in “Back to the Future” is how much it has changed in 30 years (for example, the porno house of 1985 was playing a Ronald Reagan movie in 1955). However, as Marty discovers when he sits down at a lunch counter next to his father – who is, of course, a teenager himself – many of the differences run much deeper than that. Because the film has so much fun with the paradoxes and predicaments that arise when a child meets his or her own parents, I will not go into detail about the story. Without even mentioning the horrifying moment when Marty discovers that his mother “has the hots” for him, I won’t go any further. One of the film’s greatest pleasures is the unexpected twists and turns it takes.

Film director Robert Zemeckis (Romancing the Stone) brings a lighthearted humanism to “Back to the Future,” displaying not only an excellent comic touch but also some elements of the lighthearted humanism of a Frank Capra. In fact, the film more closely resembles Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” than other, more conventional time-travel movies. It concerns a character who begins with one perspective on his life and reality, but is allowed to discover a new one as a result of a supernatural intervention. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer on this film, which is the second of the summer’s three Spielberg productions (the first was “The Goonies” and the second was “Explorers”). It’s possible that Spielberg is emulating the great studio chiefs of the past, who specialized in matching the right director with the right project. This time around, the match is based on charm, intelligence, and a lot of laughter.
