One of the most adored movies in the world is “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” directed by Aditya Chopra. The 1995 romantic melodrama is still playing in theaters, and this week it marks an unique milestone: 1000 weeks in a row of continuous screening at the Maratha Mandir in Mumbai. It would be an understatement to suggest that “DDLJ,” as it is more generally known, is the longest-running movie in Indian history. When it surpassed the milestone set by the five and a half-year action epic “Sholay,” it became the longest-running movie in Indian history. That occurred 14 years ago.
The movie is a sensation. It is performed in front of a crowd at the Maratha Mandir who can sing every phrase and recognize every scenario. The love tale of a generation is that of Raj and Simran. Since the debut of “DDLJ,” no such coupling has appeared in a Western film. They are one of the legendary on-screen couples. When I watch “DDLJ,” “When Harry Met Sally,” or “Brief Encounter,” I experience the same fervent longing for the lovers to be together.

Raj and Simran were both raised in London. Simran, an obedient daughter, has recently been told that it is time for her to travel back to India and wed the man to whom she has been betrothed since infancy but to whom she has never met. They each depart for a monthlong holiday with pals in Europe. They cross paths on a train and on subsequent travels. Raj harasses, irritates, and humiliates her. Khan and Kajol’s on-screen chemistry accounts for a large portion of the film’s exceptional appeal. Khan has the characteristics of Tom Cruise, Cary Grant, and Jerry Lewis in between. His performance was enormous, humorous, and overwhelming, and it catapulted him to stardom. Even though Kajol’s performance was more subdued, it was nonetheless entrancing.

There may be many readers in the West, where Bollywood movies are frequently and unjustifiably neglected, for whom this information is all news. I find it upsetting to consider critics who don’t write about Bollywood and depressing to consider audiences who never get to enjoy its delights.
There are just as many excellent Bollywood films as there are excellent Hollywood films thanks to India’s contributions to the film industry. Not having seen “Gone With The Wind,” “Casablanca,” or “Star Wars” is equivalent to not having seen “Mother India,” “Pyaasa,” or “Sholay.” And if you haven’t seen “DDLJ,” you’ve lost out on the positive emotions that come with watching one of the best feel-good movies.
Many people in India will use “DDLJ’s” 1000-week anniversary as an excuse to watch it for the tenth, hundredth, or maybe even—appropriately—thousandth time. There is no greater opportunity in the West for people who haven’t seen the movie to do so. “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” conveys the enticing invitation, “Come… fall in love,” to moviegoers who haven’t yet embraced Bollywood.
