We have a natural aversion to things that occur in the natural world, such as snakes, dogs that bark, and the dark, but we have to be taught to be afraid of things like walking into traffic or touching electrical wires. Horror movies that play on our deeply ingrained and irrational phobias delve much further into the human psyche than those that feature more complex dangers. This is something that the extremely successful horror film “The Blair Witch Project” is aware of and makes use of in the film. They (and we) are a lot more scared than if they were simply being pursued by a man in a ski mask because their imaginations have been stoked by talk of witches, hermits, and child murderers in the forest; because their food is running out; and because they have no smokes.
The film is almost like a celebration of low production values, demonstrating that it is possible to scare us without using bells and whistles. It takes the form of a documentary when it’s presented to you. The opening titles tell us that in 1994 three young filmmakers went into a wooded area in search of a rumored witch. “A year later, their footage was found,” the titles say. The aesthetic of the movie and even the approach that was taken during production help sell the idea that the movie is based on a real documentary. The actors who play the roles also lend their names to the characters. Both a color video camcorder and a 16-mm black and white camera were used to shoot all of the footage for the movie. Heather (Heather Donahue), the director, used the color video camcorder, and Josh, the cameraman, used the black and white 16-mm camera (Joshua Leonard). Michael Williams, also known as Mike, is in charge of the sound. Each of the three is equipped with a backpack and has provisions for two or three nights of camping in a tent in the wilderness. That is not how things turn out to be.

The buried structure of the movie, which was written by Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick and directed by the two of them, is deceptive in the way that it presents information without giving the impression that it is doing so. After arriving in the quaint community of Burkittsville (also known as “formerly Blair”), Heather and her team conduct interviews with the locals. A good number of people have only a passing familiarity with the Blair Witch and other frightening urban legends; one person quotes themselves as saying, “I think I saw a documentary on the Discovery Channel or something.” We have heard reports that children have been murdered in the woods, that bodies have gone missing, and that strange things have taken place at Coffin Rock. But the movie, in its wisdom, does not present this information as if it can be trusted; rather, it is gossip, legend, and lore, passed along half-jokingly by local people, and Heather, Josh, and Mike view it as good footage, not as a warning.

The characters’ distinct personalities begin to emerge as their level of anxiety and desperation increases. One of the guys is grumbling that “we agreed to a scouted-out project!” while the other is telling Heather, “Heather, this is so not cool!” Heather always maintains a positive attitude.
