What is it about dolls that gives them such a sinister ring to them? What is it about children in movies that makes them seem to always have some evil secret to share with their dolls? And why is it that when you look at a doll on a shelf, its eyes appear to be moving on their own accord? My guess is that when we were children, we all had a sneaking suspicion that our dolls were up to something while we were sleeping. That fear, in turn, can be exploited by the movies because the majority of us are not aware that we are carrying around a secret that is part of the subconscious trauma that makes life so interesting.

Chucky, an evil doll named Charles Lee Ray, is the focus of “Child’s Play,” a cheerfully energetic horror film of the slam-bang school that is slicker and more clever than most of its contemporaries. ‘The Lake Shore Strangler’, a Chicago mass murderer who studied voodoo under the tutelage of a black magician, has taken over the body of this doll and taken over its mind and soul. Several large explosions occur throughout the film, including one after the strangler is shot and left for dead in a toy store. Following the strangler’s death, he gathers enough energy to perform an incantation, which causes threatening clouds to roil in the sky and lightning to strike the store, causing one of the many large explosions in the film.

Introduce Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks), a widow with a part-time job as a sales clerk at Carson Pirie Scott & Company. A new type of doll that her son has seen advertised on television has piqued his interest; however, she cannot afford the $100 price tag, so she buys a cheap replica from a vendor in the alley. There are no prizes for figuring out which Lake Shore Strangler is in possession of this doll.

When Chucky the doll arrives at Karen’s house, he remains quiet around the adults, but he develops a friendship with Andy, Karen’s son (Alex Vincent). Chucky bribes Andy into doing favors for him, such as carrying him into the living room so he can watch the toy store explosion on the late news broadcast. And when the baby-sitter starts to be nosy, Chucky slams a claw-hammer between her brows and sends her tumbling through a window to the ground far beneath her feet.

Notes on the film: The claw-hammer scene is a case study of the False Alarm, which is a fundamental device in all horror films of the Mad Slasher sub-genre and is used throughout the film. If the movie starts with a scare, but the scare turns out to be a hoax, the movie takes a breather before delivering the real scare.

What is that rumbling sound coming from behind the plant stand? Let’s sneak over and take a look.

Then there’s nothing there, is there? Relief. Then there’s the whammo effect! Moment.

Wait for the False Alarm to sound the next time you watch one of these movies, then start the countdown at the exact moment you hear the sigh of relief. The “Whammo!” moment usually occurs on the fourth beat of the beat.

In comparison to the average False Alarm film, “Child’s Play” is superior because it is well-made, contains effective performances, and succeeds in creating a doll that is truly evil. Chucky is a ruthless piece of work.

About the quiz

The film also contains an intriguing plot device, which is the fact that, of course, no one will believe that the doll is still alive at the end of the film. Andy, the little boy, tries to tell them, but they refuse to believe him. Then his mother notices that Chucky is moving and talking, despite the fact that his batteries were not included in the package. They aren’t going to believe her.

When Chucky nearly strangles the police detective (Chris Sarandon), who then causes a wreck in his squad car, the detective comes to believe that Chucky is a genuine supernatural entity. The cop meets with the mother in the following scene, but he makes no mention of what has just happened to him; in a film like this, you have to do a lot to keep your attention.) Second Film Note: The film concludes with excellent demonstrations of two other conventions that can be found in all Mad Slasher films. The first is that even if you kill the monster, he will never truly be gone from your sight. After he appears to be dead, having been burned to a crisp and lacerated with bullet holes, we are treated to another Whammo! moment of peace and quiet. The godawful thing is still alive, despite the passage of time. In addition, the door is always left open for a sequel in these films, which is the second convention. “Child’s Play” deals with this issue in an ironic manner. In the final shot of the film, we see an open door.
