Cinderella has endured a lot over the course of the years, beginning with the evil stepmother and the midnight curfew, and then hundreds of versions and adaptations in books, on television, and in film, undertaken by just about everyone, including Walt Disney, Julie Andrews, Jerry Lewis, Drew Barrymore, Anne Hathaway, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Despite all of these challenges, Cinderella has continued to thrive. She is going to make it through this tricked-up version as well, which is a mishmash of relentless air quotes and sensory overload that wants to grab you by the shoulders and shout—no, sing—”BE ENTERTAINED.” But she is going to make it. Even so, there are times when we are. However, it is more like a string of TikTok clips than a movie, and watching it caused my eyes to feel like pinwheels.

To be fair, my cousin who is five years old will absolutely adore it. The fact that the story of Cinderella is considered a classic for a good reason is very helpful. The core of this story, which is about a helpless but good-hearted girl who undergoes a complete transformation and has a happy ending similar to those found in traditional fairy tales, can be found in a variety of cultures and dates back to the beginning of recorded history. In spite of the filmmakers’ best efforts to obscure it with snippets of popular songs and winks at the audience, this movie contains a few instances in which the film’s timeless narrative manages to shine through.

Editor’s Picks

The story of Cinderella is retold by each new generation with a fresh point of view. More recent adaptations have emphasized greater diversity (such as the Brandy and Whitney Houston version), greater agency (“Ever After”), or at the very least, a more compelling justification for her subservience (“Ella Enchanted”). In this retelling, Cinderella (played by singer Camila Cabello) has lofty goals of becoming a successful fashion designer and being able to support herself so that she does not have to continue living in the basement of her stepmother’s house. It also makes an effort to provide the stepmother (played by Idina Menzel) with some insight into the motivations behind her cruel behavior, and it reduces the amount of meanness displayed by the two step-sisters.

However, the screenplay that was written and directed by Kay Cannon (“Pitch Perfect”) overcorrects “Cinderella,” which results in an unbalanced narrative. It is possible to give the title character additional aspirations, independence, and humor without making the other characters in the story less interesting. However, characteristics are assigned to each of the characters in this story, making it difficult for even the talented cast to overcome the obstacles presented. The king (Pierce Brosnan) is authoritarian, the queen (Minnie Driver) is irritated, the princess (Tallulah Greive) studies public policy, and the fairy god-person (Billy Porter as Fab G) is flamboyant. Prince Robert, played by Nicholas Galitzine, has almost no redeeming qualities other than the fact that he is handsome, has a pleasant singing voice, and is completely obsessed with Cinderella. The fact that he is called “The King’s Idiot Son” is supposed to be a running joke among those who know him. However, it’s not completely incorrect either. Okay, maybe he’s not an idiot, but he’s more of a spoiled slacker than anything else. He knows exactly what he isn’t interested in, but he isn’t as sure about what he might be interested in.

It is possible that the audience will not notice all of that, however, because there is a lot going on, and the majority of it is very tuneful and colorful, with some big and bright dance numbers. This explains why the prognostication was made about the five-year-old and, if I’m being honest, the five-year-old that resides in each of us. The film kicks off with an upbeat opening number that features the locals of the village dancing to the song “Rhythm Nation.” Yes, Janet Jackson’s rendition of a new national anthem should be used in a vaguely 18th or 19th century village because it calls for social justice and is the perfect thing for the villagers to sing as they get ready for the day. On the other hand, it is undeniably peppy and energetic, with lots of popular songs from the era of Gen Z’s parents and grandparents, such as “What a Man,” “Shining Star,” and “Seven Nation Army.” This is an aspect that cannot be disputed. Unfortunately, the song “Somebody to Love” by Queen serves as a reminder that it was utilized more effectively in “Ella Enchanted.”

The musical numbers are far superior to the cutesy dialogue that is used throughout the show. The phrase “still gets spanked on the tush-tush” is uttered not just once, but twice, and both times it refers to the prince. Even Porter’s sarcastic delivery isn’t enough to save his lines about how uncomfortable the glass slippers are.

About the quiz

Cinderella is found in her basement workshop, rescuing a caterpillar from a spider web while singing “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree. It is common practice for musical characters to introduce themselves with a “I Want” song, and this is how we meet Cinderella. So, what exactly is it that she needs? to have courage, strength, wisdom, and improvement, and for love to triumph in the end. She is kind, she has a positive attitude, and the mice, including James Corden, who is the voice of one of the producers, adore her. This is yet another reminder that one of the reasons why the producer should not be in the movie is that producers are not the best judge of whether or not they add value to the movie. This is one of the reasons why the producer should not be in the movie.

The film’s genuine pleasures, such as Cabello’s appealing performance as Cinderella and the creative and energetic musical numbers, are unfortunately overshadowed by its frenetic silliness and uneven tone. This is an unfortunate distraction from the film’s genuine pleasures. This version of Cinderella could have benefited from a makeover from Fab G.
