Probably because of the conditions of the pandemic, but director Joe Carnahan and actor-producer Frank Grillo seem to be on a roll right now; this is the second film the two have released since the beginning of the year. It was Carnahan’s previous film, “Boss Level,” a fun riff on the “Edge of Tomorrow,” “Ready Player One,” and “Groundhog Day” themes that gave him a fantastic pretext for blowing things up real good, over and over and over again.

Despite the fact that “Copshop” is based on a script written by Carnahan and Kurt McLeod (the latter of whom came up with the story with Mark Williams), its setup is not dissimilar to that of “Boss Level.” Teddy Muretto is played by Grillo, who appears to be a petty criminal who a lot of people want dead. Immediately. As a result, he concludes that jail is the most secure environment for him.

Editor’s Picks

He enters a drunken and disorderly scuffle at a casino wedding, where he assaults police officer Valerie Young, who is tied up in his man bun (Alexis Louder). This solves the problem. Valerie, who recently acquired a near-antique revolver, wishes her job could be a little more Wild West-themed than it currently is. However, because her particular corner of Nevada is so sleepy, she and her sergeant had plenty of time to relax by a remote burger truck before the D&D was summoned. By the end of the film, she will not be left with the impression that she should have exercised greater caution in obtaining what she desired. Let’s say a new action hero is born, or something along those lines.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Copshop quiz.

The day after Teddy was arrested and taken to the precinct’s military-grade armory, some State Troopers sprayed a stinky sot all over Valerie’s station house. As it happens, one of the members of this party, Bob Viddick, has concocted his stinky appearance in order to get close to Teddy. Rather than being drunk, Viddick is ready to pass judgment on Grillo’s character and sentence him accordingly.

In Viddick, Gerard Butler takes on the role of Viddick, and if the prospect of a cage match between Grillo and Butler that takes place mostly in separate cages until it isn’t sounds like Guy Movie Heaven to you, feel free to ascend at your leisure. Other menacing plot elements are developing, including a corrupt cop who is attempting to smuggle drugs out of the precinct house, as the fellas trash talk each other.

The suspense is intriguing, and it is handled in a low-key manner. Indeed, for the first 50 minutes, this may appear to be a fairly restrained Joe Carnahan film, which is unusual for him. But don’t be alarmed, pilgrims. Several variations of “all hell” break loose when a gregarious psycho killer, played by Toby Huss, enters the precinct house armed with party balloons and a machine gun.

About the quiz

The shoot-’em-ups are consistently “whoa!”-inducing, and while none of the plot twists can be described as truly unpredictable, they do not lack for intrigue in their own right. Having an African-American female character go toe-to-toe with two white male action movie icons is a commendable concept, but it’s also one that Carnahan could have blown, and blow it badly. He, on the other hand, does not. Let’s get this party started.
