A young Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Jordan) sneaks out to see Golden Gloves champion Damian “Diamond Dame” Anderson (Majors) compete in an underground boxing match in 2002 Los Angeles. Following his victory, Dame shares with Donnie his desire to turn professional and win the global championship. Donnie unexpectedly strikes Leon during a detour at a booze store, and Dame is detained while Donnie flees. To devote more time to his wife Bianca (Tessa) and their daughter Amara, whose hearing disability has caused the family to become proficient in American Sign Language, Donnie (Jordan) has given up boxing in the present. When Dame is released from prison, he meets up with Donnie and expresses his wish to pick up boxing again. Donnie reluctantly extends Dame’s invitation to the gym, but Chavez and Duke make fun of him for being there. Dame subsequently pays a visit to Donnie’s house where he meets the family and hears a tale that Bianca had never heard about their time spent together in a group home. In secret, Dame requests a title matchup with Chavez, but Donnie declines. Donnie suggests Dame as Drago’s substitute when the former, Florian, is attacked by an unidentified attacker at a party for Bianca’s record company, making it unlikely that he will be able to take part in his forthcoming battle.
