This film presents a difficult challenge for this reviewer, who previously reviewed the first “Daddy’s Home” film, which came out in 2015. That said, I actually enjoyed the sequel more than the first one, finding the writing more incisive, the jokes to be more fresh and intelligent, and the comic interaction between the main characters to be more consistently engaging. I mentioned this to my bemused wife, who responded with, “So you’re saying it’s the ‘Godfather, Part 2’ of the ‘Daddy’s Home’ series,” which I found hard to believe. If she was being sarcastic, I’m not sure what she was getting at.

Here’s where things get a little tricky. I didn’t care for “Daddy’s Home” for a variety of reasons, one of which was the onslaught of “edgy” jokes that were out of place. This image softens the impact of that. As a result, there are fewer jokes made at the expense of disabled children and dogs with open sores and mange on their bodies. This, in my opinion, represents an improvement. How do you handle the situation if you, the reader, actually ENJOYS jokes about disabled children and disgustingly pitiful sick dogs? You can see where the problem is.

In terms of what “Daddy’s Home 2” does have, it’s an expansion of the family dynamic established in the first film, which anyone who has seen or heard of the “Meet the Parents” films will recognize as a strategy for gaining star power. An element of dissatisfaction must inevitably creep into the post-“Daddy’s Home” alliance between cool-bro dad Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and winsome wimp stepfather Brad (Will Ferrell). Grandfathers are the ones who bring it to this place. Dusty’s boyfriend, played by Mel Gibson, is the alpha-male ex-astronaut Kurt. Brad’s father, Don, is a motormouth ultra-limp noodle who enjoys improv comedy, and he’s played by John Lithgow in the film. Despite the fact that both granddads arrive at the airport at the same time, macho Kurt, who hasn’t seen Dusty in years, finds it difficult to contain his displeasure at the “co-dad” arrangement Dusty and Brad appear to be content in.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Daddy S Home 2 quiz.

Surely, despite their extreme differences in personality, the two characters “harbor” some resentment toward one another, as one of the characters puts it. For example, the use and misuse of the word “harbor” becomes something of an inside joke, an almost sophisticated bit of linguistic humor that would have been completely out of place in the original film. To drive a wedge between Dusty and Brad’s relationship, Kurt begins by being passive-aggressive, renting a house near a ski resort in order to better facilitate a “together Christmas” in the hopes of driving a wedge into their relationship. He then becomes more aggressive, encouraging one of Dusty’s biological children to take up turkey hunting. Some scenes feature Dylan’s father and grandfather offering advice and strategies to the ten-year-old or so Dylan on topics such as his growing interest in girls and later his inability to bowl at a competitive level. It is Brad’s slapstick incompetence that is brought into sharp relief when a runaway snowblower devastates a Christmas decoration display. Although everything is pleasant and amusing, Dusty’s new wife, Karen, is a snooty author with supermodel looks and an even more snootier daughter, Adrianna, who is the same age as Dylan and Megan, the children of Linda Cardellini’s Sarah, and thus a source of further intrigue for Dusty. Cardellini is given a little more to do in this film than she was in the previous one, which is also a plus in my opinion.

Daddy S Home 2 Quiz

When I was on my way into the theater, a friendly publicist assured me that I’d laugh, which I duly did. No, it isn’t a huge amount, but it is enough that I am forced to follow our founder Roger’s rule of comedy assessment. In its most basic form, this rule states that if a comedy makes you laugh, it has done its job and you cannot lie about it. I have to admit that when Gibson was on screen, I found myself laughing a little less frequently. I praised him for his performance in the tough action thriller “Blood Father” from last year, in which he was very credible as a former criminal who is struggling with his demons while attempting to protect his daughter from harm. However, watching him attempt to play a bullying character for laughs in this situation left a bad taste in my mouth. His character in this film is a ruthless womanizer who is particularly attracted to younger women. It was difficult for me to be entertained by his portrayal of a grandfather who attempts to entertain some ten-year-olds by starting a joke because I was aware of how this guy reacts in real life when he is crossed off by his younger girlfriend, which I learned from watching the movie. “So two dead hookers wash up on the shore…” says the author. And so forth.
