“Despicable Me” (2010) was a breath of fresh air in a crowded feature animation marketplace, thanks to its combination of vaguely European stylings, a storyline that successfully blends slapstick and sentiment, and the scene-stealing antics of the gibberish-spouting sentient Twinkies known as the Minions. From a financial standpoint, the inevitable “Despicable Me 2” (2013) was an equally big hit, but it lacked the freshness of the original and the storyline was largely forgettable. And, despite the fact that the Minions once again dominated the show, even they were beginning to feel the effects of their popularity. In the spin-off film “Minions” (2015), which did little more than illustrate to children the concept of having a little too much of a good thing, this was made particularly clear to them. Now comes “Despicable Me 3,” a depressingly rote piece of corporate product that has so little on its mind other than presumably making hundreds of millions of dollars that you half expect the ticket sellers to hand out copies of Comcast’s latest earnings report along with the 3-D glasses, which they almost certainly will.

Gru (Steve Carrell) has decided to give up his life of super-villainy after being inspired by his three adorable adopted daughters, Margo (Manda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Grier), and Agnes (Nev Scharrel). Gru (Steve Carrell) is now working as an agent for the Anti-Villainy League, alongside his new wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig). In the beginning of the film, the two are attempting to prevent the evil Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), a former child star from the 1980s who is seeking vengeance against the world for canceling his television show (“Evil Bratt”), from stealing the world’s largest diamond with the aid of a robot sidekick, scientifically enhanced bubble gum, and a keytar capable of playing the most well-known musical riffs from his favorite era. Despite the fact that he saves the diamond, Gru allows Balthazar to escape, and as a result, the new head of the AVL (Jenny Slate, in a strangely brief role), fires both him and Lucy from their positions. Just as soon as Gru has suffered a professional setback, his personal world is upended when he receives a phone call from his previously unknown twin brother Dru (also Carrell), who invites him to visit him at his home in the faraway land of Freedonia. In fact, if the name “Freedonia” brings up any memories for you, consider it a possible indication that you are a little too old for this film.

Gru and his family embark on a journey to Freedonia, where they discover that Dru is a fabulously wealthy and handsome man. The real reason for Dru’s summoning his brother is revealed just as the even more depressed Gru is about to leave, when Dru confesses that he wants his brother to teach him the tricks of the super-villain trade so that he, too, can carry on the family tradition. Gru initially refuses, but because Balthazar has managed to steal the diamond in the interim, he believes that if he can break into Bratt’s lair—a remote compound topped by a giant Rubik’s Cube—and steal it back, he and Lucy will be reinstated in the AVL. However, Gru and Lucy are not reinstated in the AVL. While the two brothers bond and plot their heist, which is made slightly more complicated by Dru’s inability to perform even the most basic of villainous tasks, the other members of the family have their own mini-adventures. Lucy struggles to adjust to her new role as the mother to Gru’s daughters, little Agnes becomes obsessed with the idea of finding and adopting her very own unicorn, and 12-year-old Margo, in an especially bizarre turn, takes pity on a boy during a weird When Gru refuses to return to being a villain after being fired, the Minions abandon him and embark on an elaborate series of misadventures that land them in prison and on a televised talent show, where they perform what is easily the strangest version of the Gilbert & Sullivan show-stopper “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” to appear in any film since the release of “The Pirate Movie.” “Minions” is rated PG.

Despicable Me 3 Quiz

Despite the fact that the “Despicable Me” films have attempted to appeal to a broad range of audiences, they are primarily directed at children under the age of 12—how else can one explain the inclusion of two fart jokes in the opening title card? A major problem with this film, however, is that the filmmakers appear to have gone out of their way to create a story out of elements that will have little appeal to the film’s intended audience. It is highly unlikely that they will be interested in Gru’s concerns about losing his job, his attempts to reconnect with his long-lost brother, Lucy’s attempts to be a good mother, or Margo’s unintentional engagement to be married. Furthermore, the entire Balthazar character is more likely than anything else to perplex and confound them because he is a parody of popular culture trends from a time period that occurred decades before they were even conceived. Meanwhile, their beloved Minions are so disjointed from the main plot that they could have been cut from the film entirely without having any impact on the overall storyline or tone. Perhaps the producers were attempting to make the film appear a little older on the grounds that the kids who embraced the original film are themselves older and more sophisticated than the kids who embraced the sequel. Considering that those particular viewers are likely to be at the movies this weekend, my guess is that they will be more inclined to try to slip into “Baby Driver” and leave this for their younger siblings.

‘Despicable Me 3’ is a payday for the vast majority of those involved with the project, as evidenced by their enthusiastic response. In his secondary role as Dru, Carrell’s Gru, who appears to be a mix of Bela Lugosi and Tommy Wiseau, is still an amusing character, but he doesn’t do anything particularly noteworthy or noteworthy in his performance. The other regulars show up and go about their business, while regular supporting players such as Julie Andrews and Steve Coogan only appear for a brief period of time to ensure future residual checks before disappearing entirely from the picture. (Apparently, they were unable to bring Russell Brand back into the fold, though the way out that has been devised is somewhat amusing.) Trey Parker’s performance as Balthazar is more disconcerting than anything else because every time you hear his voice, you half expect him to go into full “South Park” mode, which would have left the PG rating in the dust but would have at least brightened the mood a little bit.

About the quiz

The fact that “Despicable Me 3” is basically the closest thing to a sure thing at the box office, even in a season when the vast majority of would-be sure things have been flops to one degree or another, makes all of these criticisms moot, at least for the time being. Despite the problematic storytelling, I believe that little kids will enjoy it because it is colorful, noisy, and filled with silly slapstick. However, I do not believe that they will embrace it to the same extent as they did the original film. When it comes to the parents and guardians who are tasked with accompanying the children, the film will keep them occupied for 90 minutes, and they will be able to at least enjoy the 80s-era hits that are featured on the soundtrack (with the Madonna classic “Into the Groove” receiving the most airplay of the bunch) while they are waiting out the clock. And it’s not as if they’ll remember it for very long, given that the entire enterprise is even more instantly forgettable than “Despicable Me 2,” which may be the only real accomplishment of the entire enterprise.
