After returning from the Crusades, disillusioned knight Antonius Block and his cynical squire Jöns discover that the nation has been overrun by the plague. The knight meets Death, whom he dares to a game of chess because he thinks he can win as long as the game goes on. They begin a game, and it goes throughout the narrative. For the chess match, Antonius Block and Death pick teams. The knight and his squire past a group of actors, including actor-manager Jonas Skat, Jof and his wife Mia, and their young son Mikael. After having an early morning vision of Mary carrying the baby Jesus, Jof tells a smiling, doubtful Mia about it.
