During the time that I was living in Chicago, my friends and I would go to the ImprovOlympic, which is located at the intersection of Clark and Addison, on the weekends to watch teams perform long-form improv (known as “The Harold”). The house team was known as “The Family,” and it consisted of six extremely talented men who have all gone on to achieve enormous success in their careers. These men are Adam McKay, Neil Flynn, Matt Besser, Ali Farahnakian, and Ian Roberts and Miles Stroth. All of them studied with the guru Del Close. It wasn’t uncommon for guests such as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to “sit in” and perform alongside the group. Anyone who had the good fortune to attend one of those shows can attest to its legendary status. People are able to communicate with each other in lightning speed using ESP and sixth sense when the improv is done well.

The wonderful new film by Mike Birbiglia titled “Don’t Think Twice” is so accurate in its evocation of the entire “scene,” onstage and off, including its intimacy, competition, struggles, and rhythms, that there are moments in the film where it appears to be a documentary. The movie demonstrates the patience and intelligence necessary to approach extremely esoteric concepts, such as improv’s “group mind,” the generosity of good performers, the specific rules of improv, and how they impact the group outside of the theater. In addition to his work as a stand-up comedian and director (his debut film was titled “Sleepwalk With Me”), Birbiglia has experience performing improv. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about that world, but he is also adept at conveying that knowledge to a group of people. The song “Don’t Think Twice” is funny, to be sure, but it is also profound, heartbreaking, and endearing. Birbiglia is also capable of conveying those kinds of ideas effectively.

A New York-based improv group who go by the name “The Commune” are the subjects of the documentary “Don’t Think Twice,” which follows them through a year in their lives. The improv theater in Brooklyn where they’ve been performing has been sold, and they’re getting closer and closer to being homeless. Small black-box theaters are going out of business one by one, and in their place, gleaming condos and Starbucks are springing up. This situation leaves the non-Union theater scene in a barren wasteland, and it’s a problem that’s unique to New York. The Commune is having a hard time finding a space at an affordable price, and along with that, each individual member of the group is going through their own personal struggles. It may sound like “Don’t Think Twice” is just another run-of-the-mill comedy starring a group of people in their 20s, but it’s not. Because it is based on a very specific scene, it comprehends the world in which these characters function as well as the events that take place within a tight-knit group when it is subjected to fracturing change.

A brief introduction to the history of improv is provided, as well as an explanation of the three rules that govern improv. This is followed by the beginning of the story (the most important being saying yes). This phrase is more commonly known as “Yes, and…” and it describes the behavior of a performer who agrees to everything that takes place on stage. In improv, the word “no” is considered to be one of the seven deadly sins. An illustration of this would be one person pointing their finger at another and yelling “Bang bang!” The individual who was obviously just shot at responds by saying, “That’s not a gun, that’s your finger.” The line has the potential to elicit laughter, but it also brings the scene to a close. The phrase “Yes, and…” ensures that a scene continues while also creating an atmosphere of acceptance, which is necessary for any and all successful improv. The way that Birbiglia and his ensemble cast approach each and every scene in the movie is with a “Yes, and…”.

Birbiglia plays the role of Miles, who is noticeably older than the other members of the band. He instructed the majority of them in improv classes, and he now grapples with feelings of resentment and hurt as a result of the fact that one by one, his students have achieved greater professional success than he has. Jack (Keegan-Michael Key, from “Key & Peele,” who is beautiful here in a complex performance) and Samantha (the outstanding Gillian Jacobs) are in a comfortable relationship that is then challenged when Jack seems like he is advancing in his career. Because her family has a trust fund, Lindsay (Tami Sagher) does not have to work during the day because she is able to live comfortably at home. She has a sense of shame regarding her privilege. (This is yet another observation that rings true about any given theatre scene: the unfair envy directed toward those whose families have a lot of money.) Bill (Chris Gethard) toils away at his writing submissions for “Weekend Live” until his father becomes ill, at which point he is sidetracked by his father’s illness. “Weekend Live” is an obvious knockoff of “Saturday Night Live,” which the group watches religiously while maintaining a poker face. And last but not least, there’s Allison, played by Kate Micucci, who is fantastic at improv but has a deep-seated desire to finish writing her graphic novel. Although each character’s story has a distinct trajectory from beginning to end, some of them receive more attention than others.

When one of the members of the group tries out for “Weekend Live” and gets cast, it serves as a significant impetus for change within the group. They are overjoyed, and the rest of the group is as well because one of their very own has achieved success. Although no one wishes to steal the spotlight from the victor, it is impossible to deny the presence of conflicting emotions. It brings to mind a profound statement made by Oscar Wilde, who said, “Anyone can sympathize with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature—in fact, it requires the nature of a true Individualist to sympathize with a friend’s success.” The person who is chosen to leave their friends behind has conflicted feelings about doing so, and they are not portrayed as being heartless and evil for doing so in order to pursue their goal of winning the prize. The book “Don’t Think Twice” provides valuable insight into the ways in which success can alter relationships. The fact that success can be achieved in a variety of different ways is acknowledged at a later point in the movie, which is one of the most realistic aspects of the work. Some people place value on outward success (fame and fortune), but not everyone does.

About the quiz

The progression of “Don’t Think Twice” is carefully planned out, while the style of the song is more free-form. “Bits” are individual improvisations on current events that are performed in groups at social gatherings and while people are just hanging out at the bar. The relationship between Jack and Samantha serves as an example of this. Movies rarely depict romantic relationships in which both partners place a significant emphasis on their ability to make the other person laugh. There are also couples like that. When do we ever get to see them? The movie features a significant amount of improv, and those sequences could have been terrible if the audience had the impression that they were rehearsed “bits” rather than genuine spontaneous events. There is no way to tell what was planned and what happened spontaneously due to the fluid and intuitive movement of the camera during Joe Anderson’s performance, which takes place on stage in the middle of the action. It is easy to understand why so many people attend the shows that The Commune puts on week after week, much like how audiences in Chicago continue to visit Second City and ImprovOlympic (now known as The iO).

People who are devoted to improv talk about it with an evangelical gleam in their eyes because it serves as a great model for society. This is because improv is a great model for society. Imagine that we all took the time to listen to one another in exactly the same way. What would it be like if we welcomed the things that each other brought to the table with kindness and candor? What if, instead of starting each interaction with “No, but…”, we started each interaction with “Yes, and…”? A world in which “Yes, and… ” is the default is depicted in the stunning and subtly profound film directed by Birbiglia.
