What are the chances that a second group of people will be foolish enough to break into Stephen Lang’s home in order to try and steal something that is valuable to Stephen Lang? That’s the improbable premise of “Don’t Breathe 2,” a sequel that falls short of the novelty and thrills of the surprise hit film from 2016.
The filmmakers from Uruguay, Rodo Sayagues and Fede Alvarez, are wise to expand on the universe of the first film, which took place entirely in and around Lang’s character’s home and neighborhood. The clever idea was that he was blind, which made him an easy target for burglars, at least in theory. He was a fearsome Gulf War veteran who was intimately familiar with every square foot of the location and whose other senses were enhanced, making him an unstoppable killing machine. They had no idea what they were getting themselves into. They collaborated on the script for the first “Don’t Breathe,” which was directed by Alvarez; this time, they share co-writing credit with Sayagues, who is also directing.
They were unable to simply remake “Don’t Breathe.” That would be a complete waste of everyone’s talents and a complete waste of time. Instead, they kidnap Lang’s Norman Nordstrom and use him as a prop to give him a reason to get out of the house. The end result is nuttier and more savage, but never as tense or tight as it could have been. Knowing what we know about his brutal past from the first film, it’s even more difficult to root for him to be victorious in his battle against his invaders. While there is some style on display here, the highlight is a lengthy tracking shot through Norman’s house at the start of the break-in; glimmers of this kind of complicated choreography and camerawork appear elsewhere, but this sequence stands out as the best. Moreover, with his shock of white hair and slender frame, Lang is always a commanding presence, evoking an atmosphere of menace with nothing more than growls and his physical steeliness.

When “Don’t Breathe 2” takes place, it will be eight years after the events of the first film, which means it will take place in the near future if you’re keeping track. An accidental house fire left a little girl orphaned and alone in the middle of the street; Norman swooped in and took her into his home, where he has raised her as his own daughter. The name Phoenix, which is only slightly on the nose, was given to her by her father as well. Meanwhile, Shadow is the name of the Rottweiler who follows her around and protects her, and the film manages to get even less subtle from there on out. Phoenix (played by Madelyn Grace) has grown up in her father’s dilapidated Detroit home, but now that she is a tween, she longs desperately to live a normal life, make friends, and go to school, all of which are out of reach for her. The reason why the outside world can be so dangerous becomes clear during one of her weekly field trips to run errands with a trustworthy friend.
Dont Breathe 2 Quiz
The release of a film called “Don’t Breathe 2” about people who stay in their homes all day is difficult to judge at this point; the fact that it is only playing in theaters suggests that the studio hopes you will be willing to leave yours.)

When a gang of idiot tweakers, led by a sleazy Brendan Sexton III, follows Phoenix back to his hometown, we eventually learn what they’re really up to. The resulting twists range from intriguing to insane, but they do alter the course of the story, transforming what could have been a fairly standard home invasion thriller into something wilder, stranger, and—at times—darkly humorous. Throughout the film’s first half, the use of silence, creaking doors, and plodding footsteps gives way to gruesome, bloody violence and vivid sound design as Norman fights off and outwits his pursuers, a technique that has earned Sayagues acclaim. Grace is able to keep up with the physical demands of her role throughout it all, but she doesn’t have much else to offer as a character. As a result of her constant reaction, Phoenix is either employing the survival skills that her “father” has taught her or absorbing new information about her true identity. Meanwhile, subplots involving an organ trafficking ring and a nearby children’s shelter are awkwardly inserted into the overall narrative.
About the quiz
In “Don’t Breathe 2,” however, the most daring feat of all is the attempt to completely rehabilitate Norman. It’s commendable and even unusual for a studio film to offer such moral ambiguity in its horror hero — and that’s definitely what he is here, at least in comparison to other horror films — but the reason for his torment remains a mystery until the very end. Despite his good-hearted efforts now and the obvious love for dogs that serves as a shorthand for his redemption, there’s an unavoidable feeling of uneasiness that can’t be ignored. To Lang’s credit, we are willing to accompany him on his unexpected journey and are actually interested in whether or not he will be successful in continuing to kick asses away from the comfort of his own home. Despite his deeply flawed humanity, he maintains his superhuman abilities.
