The evil and wicked Queen Narissa schemes to keep her hold on the throne in the animated realm of Andalasia, which she will lose once her stepson, Prince Edward, discovers and weds his true love. She enlists Nathaniel, a devoted servant, to keep Edward occupied with troll hunting. A young woman named Giselle fantasizes about finding a prince and living “happily ever after.” She collaborates with woodland animals to create a handcrafted statue of her true love with the help of her chipmunk buddy Pip. Giselle is singing, and Edward hears her and goes looking for her. To kill Giselle, Nathaniel releases a troll that had been imprisoned, but Edward saves her. She and Edward fall in love right away and decide to get married the next day. Giselle is stopped on her route to the wedding by Narissa, who is posing as an old hag. Narissa forces Giselle into a well, where she transforms into a live-action version of herself and is transported to Times Square in New York City. Giselle is startled and rapidly gets lost. Robert, a divorce attorney, is about to pop the question to Nancy. On their way home, Robert and his little daughter Morgan run upon Giselle. At Morgan’s pleading that Giselle is a princess, Robert grudgingly agrees to let Giselle stay in their apartment.

After being transformed into live-action versions of themselves, Pip and Edward set out on a rescue mission to the real world. Pip, who has grown into a mature chipmunk, can no longer speak and now just squeaks. Nathaniel is sent by Narissa to pursue and obstruct Edward. When the clock strikes twelve, anyone who eats one of the three poisoned apples Narissa gives Nathaniel will pass away. Nancy shows up to take Morgan to school while Giselle summons insects and rodents to clean Robert’s apartment. Upon meeting Giselle, she departs, believing Robert to be unfaithful. Despite his initial disappointment, Robert spends the day with Giselle since he is aware of her vulnerability in the city. Giselle confronts Robert about his relationship with Nancy and facilitates their reconciliation by extending an invitation to a masquerade ball at the Woolworth Building and bringing Nancy flowers.
