Can you tell me what the Stephen Merchant is cooking up right now? In spite of the fact that “Fighting with My Family” features a cameo by Dwayne Johnson, a slew of funny talent performing athletic slapstick, and even some hilarious jabs at Vin Diesel, the key to WWE Studios’ best film to date is the co-creator of shows such as “Hello Ladies” and “The Office,” Brian Grazer. It is Merchant’s ability to write razor-sharp dialogue and character-based comedy that allows him to bring this heartwarming true story to life. The film tells the story of WWE superstar Paige, who comes from a completely lovable wrestling family and rises to international stardom.

It is shown that Saraya Knight and her brother, Zak, were fighting when they were children, and their parents intervene to correct the chokehold in order to make it more effective. Their home proves to be a charming environment, in which the parents, former convict and current teddy bear Ricky (Nick Frost) and force of nature Julia (Lena Headey), are deeply in love with one another and with each other. During their wrestling lessons in their working-class English town, where they teach a group of excitable young kids how to pin, bounce off the ropes, and so on, the family spreads this positive atmosphere throughout their wrestling gym and indie wrestling league. The two main characters are the now-grown Knight children, Saraya (Florence Pugh), whose jet-black hair and lip ring are as distinguishing as her shyness and shortness, and Zac (Zac Efron), who is a bit of a hothead (Jack Lowden). Every member of the Knight clan considers himself or herself an equal, and when they fight, it is only for the good of the clan.

Editor’s Picks

In one of the film’s most amusing scenes, the Knights meet the parents of Kirsten (Aqueela Zoll), Zac’s girlfriend, which takes place early on in the film. The Knight family, led by Kirsten’s father, played by the comparatively demure Merchant, is a true bull in a china shop of upper-class niceties, as the film depicts. It’s especially amusing to watch Merchant interact with them because it highlights the fact that this family has its own language and that they can’t help but be themselves in the process. But most of all, they’re pleased with themselves for having made it this far. A very warm ensemble comedy is created, with the quartet’s chemistry creating an inviting nest, which Saraya quickly abandons when she is given the opportunity to pursue a career in professional wrestling.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Fighting With My Family quiz.

Ultimately, Saraya’s steady rise to WWE stardom through blood, sweat and tears (during which she changes her stage name from Britani to Paige) presents Merchant with a narrative challenge that is difficult to pin down: how do you show a character’s progress arc in an industry where everything is fixed, not faked? He comes up with a solution in part by not forgetting about Zac when he doesn’t make the cut, and by emphasizing Paige’s flaws, which include the fact that she isn’t as strong as some of the other women, which her coach Hutch (played with tough love by Vince Vaughn) constantly reminds her of. And, to make matters worse, she experiences stage fright when it comes to performing the essential act of trash-talking in the ring. Pugh and Lowden’s powerful dramatic performances convey the complete frustration and isolation that they feel as a result of these shortcomings. They are hardworking people who, for a variety of reasons, are tempted to give up on their dreams. In the end, this results in moments where the film, despite its unabashedly formulaic nature, can be genuinely moving and inspirational.

However, in spite of the numerous montages that demonstrate the physical demands of wrestling, this film is truly about successfully branding yourself to superstardom, something that WWE appears to be denying in its pursuit of a classic athletic success narrative. However, even though there is a sense that some people simply have “spark” and others do not, Vaughn provides little explanation for this, blurring the possibility of being able to root for someone who does have “it,” whatever that may be. Despite the fact that Saraya’s first big match (known at the time as Paige) did have the same winner, The Rock revealed during the Sundance Q&A that he did tell her the outcome the night before, which is something the script avoids mentioning. Even though we see Paige and her peers pour every ounce of their being into this entertainment, we can’t help but think that it is artifice in awkward denial of itself, and it cheapens the hard work of people like her.

About the quiz

The film is packaged in part as a look back on executive producer Dwayne Johnson’s own success; it opens with old wrestling footage of him as The Rock, and then jokes at the end about how he made a successful career for himself outside of wrestling. It brings to mind how Johnson rose to stardom by portraying himself as down-to-Earth both on and off-screen, making him one of the most inspirational celebrities you can follow on Instagram, according to the magazine. When you watch “Fighting with My Family,” you get a comforting sense that the WWE is following in his footsteps: even though the film is unquestionably about branding the WWE as a fantasy factory, its greatest strengths are its wit and surprisingly large heart, which celebrates underdogs who rumble for what they love.
