Clownfish Marlin and his mate, Coral, and their eggs reside in an anemone on the Great Barrier Reef. After a barracuda devours Coral and nearly all of the eggs, Marlin becomes overly protective of his offspring Nemo, who was born from the last egg. On Nemo’s first day of school, while Marlin is talking to his instructor, he approaches a speedboat, where he is apprehended by a pair of scuba divers. Marlin unsuccessfully pursues the boat and encounters Dory, a blue tang with severe short-term memory loss, who offers her assistance. The two come across Bruce, Anchor, and Chum, three sharks who have vowed not to consume fish. Marlin discovers a diver’s mask that has fallen from the boat, unintentionally striking Dory and causing a nosebleed. The smell of her blood causes Bruce to go into a feeding frenzy, but the sharks flee after inadvertently setting off old naval mines, knocking Marlin and Dory unconscious.

Nemo is housed in an aquarium in Sydney dentist Philip Sherman’s office. He encounters the “Tank Gang,” which is headed by Gill, a Moorish idol. The Tank Gang informs Nemo that he will be given to Sherman’s niece Darla, who murdered her prior fish.
