Take a few deep breaths. Take a deep breath in and out. Those of us who have the luxury of taking our breathing for granted get to choose when we think about drawing air into our lungs—to center our thoughts, to relax, to sing, to blow up a balloon, to run, to do anything we want with our bodies. In the case of people suffering from lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF), every breath is a struggle, a victory, and a painful reminder that it could be their last.

Only a few decades ago, those born with cystic fibrosis had a life expectancy of 10 years. As a result, people with cystic fibrosis (CF) such as the teenagers in the film “Five Feet Apart” have only recently lived long enough to gain a true understanding of their disease and its limitations.

Stella (a radiant Haley Lu Richardson) checks into the hospital for treatment of an infection as if it were her second home, and she is not disappointed. Barb (Kimberly Hebert Gregory), a compassionate nurse, and the rest of the medical staff are all old friends of the family. Stella is familiar with all of the routines, and she knows what to bring with her for comfort, which includes her stuffed panda, the laptop she uses to post updates about her life with cystic fibrosis, and the pictures on her wall from her bedroom.

Editor’s Picks

Even though Stella is aware that her best case scenario, a lung transplant, may only be effective for five years, she understands that in the CF medical relay race, the best case scenario is always to survive long enough for better treatment to be discovered.

As a result, Stella has discovered that feeling in control of her “regimen” of care, organizing the medication cart, taking her pills with chocolate pudding, and visiting the babies in the neonatal intensive care unit are some of her most effective coping mechanisms.

Poe (Moises Arias), her best friend from high school, has returned to the hospital as well. So is Will (Cole Sprouse), another teenage cystic fibrosis patient who is there for an experimental drug trial. In contrast to Stella who is extremely, if not hyper-cooperative with her treatment in the hopes of receiving a lung transplant, Will is cynical and rebellious, in part due to the fact that his prognosis is less optimistic. Even if the medication is effective, the B-cepacia infection has rendered him ineligible for a transplant because of the infection. Eventually, Stella persuades him to keep up with his regimen, and he agrees if she agrees to let him sketch her.

When it comes to love stories, there has to be a compelling reason to keep the couple apart, and in this case, that means physically apart. Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) must be at least six feet apart from one another because of their vulnerability to infection. As if the Montagues and the Capulets were bacteria and the Capulets were a set of new lungs, they are Romeo and Juliet.

Latex gloves are required, and they must keep a distance of six feet between them at all times. Stella expresses her feelings for Will by saying, “After everything CF has taken away from me, I don’t mind stealing one foot back.” As a result, they set a date while still within the confines of the hospital (apparently hospitals have swimming pools), using a five-foot pool cue to determine their distance from one another. Finally, because they are teenagers, they are willing to take some extremely dangerous risks.

However, while it’s tempting to dismiss this story as “sick-lit,” director Justin Baldoni successfully weaves together the compelling specifics of cystic fibrosis with the larger questions we all face about finding meaning in a world filled with uncertainty and loss. Moreover, he accomplishes this feat with the help of two talented and appealing young actors, particularly Richardson, whose exquisitely expressive face conveys to us every ounce of hope, fear, hesitation, regret, and longing that Stella is experiencing.

About the quiz

It is clear that Baldoni gained a great deal from his “My Last Days” television series, which documented the lives of terminally ill people, including one who had cystic fibrosis, and that this knowledge has helped him to be sensitive and insightful in exploring these issues within a fictional story. In the hospital setting, he makes the most of the way he uses the space, particularly the atrium lobby with its drab, durable institutional furniture. As Stella and Will fall in love, their tenderness and excitement seem to warm the atmosphere around them.

Even in good health, young people can pass away. Illness has the potential to destroy families, both emotionally and financially. It can be frightening to fall in love with someone, and it can be even more frightening to allow someone else to fall in love with you, especially if you are self-conscious about your scars. All of us try to find a way to feel in control of something, whether it’s by lining up pills in the correct order on a meds cart and following instructions or by putting a “Abandon all hope ye who enter here” sign on a hospital door and disobeying sound advice. Several characters say, in their case because they do not have a “normal” lifespan, “We don’t have time for delicacy,” but in reality, films like this remind us that we could all do a better job of making the most of the time we have available to us.
