Students at a university’s medical school deliberately kill themselves for short periods of time in order to gain a better understanding of what lies beyond. This is a fantastic idea for a movie, but unfortunately, “Flatliners” represents the second failed attempt to bring it to life successfully. It’s not a bad film, and the original was not a bad film either. Neither is particularly bad, but neither is particularly good either: the cast gives their all in every scene, struggling to find profundity in situations that are conceived in the most superficial way, frequently settling for cheap horror movie jolts and “it was all a dream” false alarms, and the story is wrapped up so neatly that the sense of wonder and terror inherent in the story remains largely untapped.

However, the premise of the original, which could have opened the door to a visionary work of sci-fi horror starring a cast of soon-to-be-huge stars, including Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland, who has a supporting role here, instead settles into a sort of gothic self-help drama groove, with the medical students realizing that the seemingly supernatural goings-on triggered by their experiments in “flatlining” were manifestations of their past traumatic experiences That template is adhered to in director Niels Arden Oplev’s remake, which was adapted by Ben Ripley from Peter Filardi’s original script. However, key details are altered here and there while the film embraces a style that combines every current horror movie visual cliché into a jagged paste.

Ellen Page portrays Dr. Courtney Holmes, a woman whose younger sister died in a car accident years ago as a result of her own carelessness. A group of her fellow residents—Diego Luna’s earnest and responsible Ray, Nina Dobrev’s flirty hardcore Marlo, James Norton’s rich kid Casanova Jamie, and Kiersey Clemons’ stressed-out and mommy-dominated Sophia—help her administer heart-stopping drugs to kill her for three minutes and heart paddles to wake her back up so that she can report what she saw to the authorities. In addition to experiencing the sensation of flying, she sees angles on the campus and in the city that she has never personally experienced. This is sufficient to persuade her colleagues, with the exception of the cautious and ethical Ray, who is primarily responsible for preventing tragedy, to undergo the same treatment.

But then, to the accompaniment of ominous bass fiddles, strange things begin to happen. In the midst of her grief over her sister’s death, Courtney is visited by an apparition who appears to be connected to her feelings of guilt. Jamie, Marlo, and Sophia all begin to experience creepy events and disturbing visions within a short period of time. By the time the film reaches its midpoint, there’s no doubt about where the film needs to go before the credits roll at the conclusion.

Characters wandering through dark apartments, basements, and corridors, wondering if the noises they hear are real or if they are just in their heads, while out-of-focus shapes and faces dart through the negative space nearby, account for nearly a quarter of the film’s running time. Sometimes these shocks are heightened by the shriek of atonal soundtrack music, and every now and then you’ll be hit with a jolt of graphic violence that rarely has any long-term consequences for the characters. When you realize what’s going on, there’s no longer any real suspense to speak of, just a bunch of manipulations for a short period of time.

The cast gives their all to the film and the result is a triumph. Sophia’s story comes into focus near the end, and the film achieves the perfect balance of inspirational melodrama and horror that had previously eluded it. Luna and Page, in particular, make much stronger impressions than you might expect, given the repetitive and mostly shallow scenarios they’re asked to enact. Although there is some goodwill generated by the actors, the choppy, cliched visuals as well as the script’s superficial approach to the characters’ predicaments (people are constantly stating the obvious to each other and to the audience) ultimately undermine any goodwill that the actors may have generated.

About the quiz

Because you can tell at every step of the process that everyone involved in the production truly believed in the material, both as raucous entertainment and as a tale of moral growth, this type of film can be more frustrating than a maliciously terrible or blunderingly incompetent film, which can be particularly frustrating. However, when the best you can say about a movie is that it is well-intentioned, that is evidence that it is not working on any level that is important. Also, you must try to play this Flatliners quiz.
