Do the creators of “Followed,” a surprising effective found-footage horror film, realize how amusing their social media critique is? The generic scare scenes in their film are never as startling or cruel as the scenes in which Mike (Matthew Solomon), an obnoxious PewDiePie/Logan Paul-type vlogger, reminds us of his rinky dink goal of earning 50,000 subscribers by making tasteless videos about the Hotel Lennox, the haunted site of some grisly unsolved murders, reminds us of his rinky dink goal of earning 50,000 subscribers by making taste Considering that Mike is as obnoxious as you might expect given his online persona of doing anything for the sake of amusement, I’m still surprised that “Followed” is as amusing as it is. A cartoonishly loud, entitled millennial who never ceases to remind us that he is only concerned with the sound of his own voice, he is a good friend. Is he also prone to unintentional hysteria from time to time?

But the most terrifying aspect of “Followed” is not the film’s clumsy and mostly underwhelming horror sequences, but rather Mike’s deathless pursuit of a $250,000 sponsorship from a Hot Topic-style boutique called “Haute Gothic.” Mike believes that everything other than money and social status is pointless because he is a caricature of a straight white 20-something with no sexual orientation. he’s become so desensitized that he thinks aloud about paying a black man $50 to perform a back flip for him. “A devil worshipper, how cliche,” Mike says when interviewing a relatively serious true crime expert (John Savage) about the Hotel Lennox. “Follow Satan, you will,” Mike says when interviewing a relatively serious true crime expert (John Savage) about the Hotel Lennox. Yoda jokes are constantly being made by kids these days.

Editor’s Picks

Mike’s retribution is unavoidable, especially given the numerous scenes in which he is pitted against Chris (Tim Drier), his suitably meek lapsed Catholic cameraman. Moreover, to be fair, the undead residents of the Hotel Lennox are somehow even more underwhelming when compared to the unsettling pregnant pauses that are much more effective than the film’s unsettling jump scare climaxes.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Followed quiz.

In other words, “Followed” isn’t a particularly insightful social media critique, nor is it a particularly inventive variation on the “Screen-Life” horror-thrillers that Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov has recently monopolized the market for. In fact, Internet hoaxes of the “Creepypasta” variety can be found in real life, and YouTubers are frequently scuzzy moron trolls who are both old enough to know better and too young to be taken seriously. However, there’s only so much blood left in this well-tapped anti-vlogging vein, as evidenced by the hysterical interstitial scenes in which an unidentified computer user breathes heavily while uploading Mike’s last known footage to his website, which are a source of great amusement. Put an end to you irresponsible and (literally) mouth-breathing whippersnappers!

Followed Quiz

Having said that, “Followed” is frequently disarmingly mean, which goes a long way in these kinds of post-“Blair Witch Project” genre exercises. In the first place, Mike has become an irresistible target as a result of Solomon’s enthusiastic performance. Even if Mike doesn’t exist in real life, Solomon makes it easy to believe that someone like him does, if only in small doses. When Mike shows Chris and his fellow cameraperson Danni (Sam Valentine) to their room: #1428, the infamous residence of devil-worshiping serial killer David “Night Crawler” Olmos, Chris does a genuinely unfortunate happy dance (Ethan Alexander). In addition, Solomon is convincingly irritated whenever Mike tries to shock his friends with the most gruesome thing that comes to mind, such as when he suggests making shish kebabs after spotting an air vent that might or might not have been the final resting place of ex-lodger Meghan Kim (Sarah Chang), whose corpse was mysteriously burnt to a crisp.

Even better, Solomon whines uncontrollably whenever he is required to deliver already absurd lines of expository and/or declamatory dialogue. Given how risible some of Chris’ dialogue can be, it’s difficult to tell if Mike is intended to be amusing. For example, when Chris scoffs that Mike’s group will never be able to get “a good night’s sleep in this place,” Mike understandably responds with a “nut tap.” Nonetheless, Mike is amusing on a regular basis, as when they discover a bloody eyeball (in Mike’s hands, no less!) and he attempts to reassure his team by stating that “it’s probably from the same animal as the [rotting] tongue and the entrails” that they had previously discovered. As a result, when Mike complains about Chris’s unwillingness to cooperate—”Are you seriously going to ditch the vlog over one hotel?” he asks—or when he earnestly insists that “my followers are expecting us to go into the basement,” he is almost equally as amusing as anyone else.

About the quiz

Often, Mike’s lack of survival skills serves to accentuate his lack of character. For example, he remarks about how the hotel’s basement “does not smell good” right before an avalanche of mysteriously appearing human arms and legs detonates on top of him. So, while “Followed” will not lead you to any conclusions that you cannot reach on your own, it can be entertaining to arrive at them in the first place.
