For Love or Money” stars Michael J. Fox, one of the most likeable actors working today, as the lead in a romantic comedy that is so thin that his charisma is required to carry the entire production. Take away Fox’s basic human appeal and that of his love interest, Gabrielle Anwar, and what’s left wouldn’t be enough to sustain 22 minutes of television entertainment.
“For Love and Money” is set up in such a way that it is crystal clear what must happen, but the film bravely goes forward as if it has no idea what is going on. The story revolves around Fox, who plays a New York hotel concierge who falls in love with the sweet and innocent mistress of a millionaire. Can you guess who ends up with the lady? By including behind-the-scenes information about the hotel’s operation, an attempt is made to flesh out this concept, which must have been centuries old in Chaplin’s day. However, there is no attempt to be original or observant even in this case. We see some corridors, meet the snotty manager and the venerable bellman, and learn that conciergi in Central Park exchange theater tickets with one another, among other things. However, the film is not about a hotel; rather, it is about ancient plot devices. Doug Ireland, the concierge at a hotel where every guest requires personalized service, is played by Fox. One of them is Christian Hanover (Anthony Higgins), a conceited rich man who takes advantage of the naive but beautiful Andy Hart without a second thought (Gabrielle Anwar). Seeing Andy makes Doug’s heart go pitter-pat, but he can’t act on his feelings because Hanover is a big tipper, so he keeps his mouth shut.
Doug, of course, has a fantasy of his own. On an island off the coast of Manhattan, he wants to build a hotel, and he’s already purchased an option to do so. Now he needs a supporter, and Hanover is willing to oblige. Doug is well aware that Andy has a thing for him, and he is well aware of how shamelessly the married millionaire is deceiving her. Doug, on the other hand, will lose his hotel if he wins his love.

That’s all there is to it. Although the film is set in the 1950s, it feels like it could have been a Sandra Dee comedy from a different era altogether.

Nothing in it is particularly witty, nor is it particularly innovative, nor is it particularly intelligent. There is a half-hearted attempt to work up some slapstick in a scene at the millionaire’s summer home, and Gabrielle Anwar makes an appealing presence (you might remember her from “Scent Of A Woman”).
