The movie “Forever My Girl” will appeal to fans of Nicholas Sparks films, according to the director.

And if you aren’t, what are you doing? Please consider yourself forewarned.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, employing this TV commercial version of a pick-up line in the service of selling an emotionally charged romantic comedy about second chances, based on the popular YA novels by author Heidi McLaughlin, isn’t a bad idea. That’s because the Sparks brand of big-screen adaptations was officially extinguished in 2016 after No. 11, “The Choice,” grossed a pitiful $19 million in box office receipts. As a result, it’s hard to criticize the filmmakers of “Forever My Girl” for capitalizing on the void left in the cinematic universe for lovey-dovey schmaltz dressed up with messages about family values.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Forever My Girl quiz.

At the very least, “Forever My Girlovertly “‘s predictable plot makes more sense than any other film set in what I like to call Sparks-landia, a bizarre-o world where kisses only happen when the spit swappers are drenched with water, youthful flashback versions of characters look nothing like their older counterparts, and tragedy is most likely to strike just as complete and utter happiness appears to be within reach.

Forever My Girl Quiz

This story of Liam Page (Alex Roe), a country music superstar who abandoned his high-school sweetheart and fiancée Josie (Jessica Rothe) at the altar eight years ago while fleeing small-town Louisiana doesn’t rely on drippy kisses, crazy coincidences, or worldly-wise geezers to tell its story. Instead, it is as bland as a mayonnaise sandwich on white bread that was made after the mayonnaise was forgotten. It is a film in which a great deal appears to happen, but which ultimately amounts to little.

Despite this, writer/director Bethany Ashley Wolf has her own set of bizarre plot points to deal with that are not related to Sparks. This includes Liam’s beloved battered Nokia flip phone, which contains Jodie’s final message from years ago—a message to which he never responded—and which takes up a significant portion of the film’s running time. Aside from that, grief over the deaths of various departed loved ones, along with guilt over bad decisions made in the past and present, drive the actions of the main characters far more than any renewed passion. However, despite Wolf’s admirable efforts to include a diverse group of people of color in the fictional Southern town, none of them are allowed to make a significant contribution to the action.

About the quiz

This includes the events that lead Liam to return to the scene of the crime and finally face the consequences, as well as Josie’s wrath in the form of a literal punch to the gut. In the aftermath of a New Orleans concert, he learns that his best friend from high school, who also happens to be African-American and a councilman, has been killed in an accident while watching the local news. His desire to attend his friend’s memorial service may be genuine, but it appears to be more of an excuse for him to take a break from the demands of celebrity life. Liam is even too shy to fully participate in the service, which is presided over by his pastor father (seasoned actor John Benjamin Hickey, who serves as a welcome counter-balance to the lesser-known actors in the cast), who is initially dissatisfied that his prodigal son has returned.

However, what is most perplexing about the plot’s turn is that, rather than attempting to win back Josie, Liam devotes the majority of his efforts to winning over her Code-Red-level precocious seven-year-old daughter (Abby Ryder Fortson of “Ant-Man”)—especially after doing the math and discovering her name is Billie—which is particularly confusing (Liam is Irish for William). Of course, she is his child, so that’s no surprise. It’s kind of sweet that he’s starting to make up for lost father-daughter time, and that he’s thrilled that Billie has inherited his proclivity for guitar strumming. However, it seems as if it will be an eternity before there is any real romance in the picture. Instead, topics such as fear of pet rabbits, the necessity of a child-size car seat, and the ins and outs of ordering items online are discussed. Even though she insists she is fine without him, and even though she owns her own florist shop, Josie is a complete pushover, no matter how many emotional speed bumps appear along the road.

Due to the fact that I have not read the book on which “Forever My Girl” is based, I must put my faith in the outraged online fans who are upset that Liam is no longer a bad-boy rocker and that Josie is now blonde rather than brunette. In addition, their son, who was originally ten years old, was at issue. Rothe, on the other hand, has a certain star quality and can sing and dance, which you would only know if you saw her as one of Emma Stone’s roommates in the film “La La Land.” Rothe is not utilized to her full potential here. Roe is a doll, complete with chest-hugging T-shirts, and she has a good enough voice to carry the not-bad original songs on the soundtrack. In addition, Travis Tritt graciously makes a cameo appearance, and Blake Shelton is mentioned. Nonetheless, the dwindling returns of CMT’s “Nashville” provide more pleasure than this country soap opera.
