St. Petersburg, Russia, in the late 18th or early 19th century is the setting for Captain Robert Walton’s adventures. Archangel port is his destination. He’ll recruit some brave Russians for a trip to the north pole. Many kilometers from land, the boat is stranded in impassable ice. Boring! In the absence of any other activity, he sends letters to his sister back home. What’s his major issue about the situation? It would be nice to have a male companion to keep him company. Victor marries Elizabeth shortly after arriving in Geneva with his father. On his wedding night, he fears that he will be slain because of the monster’s threat. In the meantime, Elizabeth screams and he knows that the creature had been implying that he would be the one to die. A few times later, Victor’s father succumbs to grief. As soon as Victor leaves to begin his journey, he resolves to spend the rest of his life discovering the monster and getting revenge.
Victor pursues the creature northward into the ice, but it is impossible to catch up. A dogsled chase almost brings Victor to the monster, but the sea beneath them rises as the ice cracks, leaving them separated. He meets Victor at this point, which brings us up to date with Walton’s fourth letter to his sister.
About the quiz
Walton tells his sister the rest of the story in the second set of letters. Already ill when the two men meet, Victor’s condition deteriorates and he dies shortly after. Walton is horrified when he returns to the chamber some days later to find the monster grieving over Victor. Walton learns of the monster’s loneliness, misery, hatred, and remorse. As his creator has died, he believes he can stop his pain. To die, the creature travels to the farthest reaches of the ice.
