“Free Guy” is like a hyperactive puppy, always on the go. It is genuinely interested in becoming your friend. It’s easy to like and enjoyable to spend time with. It also has a bad habit of running around in circles, losing its concentration, and spitting on the floor when it gets frustrated. “Free Guy” is a family action film that is aimed squarely at the Fortnite Generation. It also preaches the importance of individuality while not only feeling like a dozen other films, but also literally incorporating some of their imagery into its production. The film is held together by an engaging cast, which includes Jodie Comer’s performance that steals the show, but there are still just enough flaws in the system to make one wish it was better overall.

Using a set-up that is reminiscent of “The LEGO Movie,” “Free Guy” introduces us to Guy (Ryan Reynolds), an NPC (Non-Player Character) in a wildly successful open world video game called “Free City.” Guy is a very likable character, and the film is very entertaining. He dresses in the same outfit every day, orders the same cup of coffee, and goes to work at the same bank, which is robbed multiple times a day by real players in this “Grand Theft Auto”-style simulation. He doesn’t give a damn. Every thing is going swimmingly for Guy and his best friend Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) until the happy duo comes across a real player who goes by the handle Molotov Girl (Comer) and breaks his pattern by following the seductive woman down the street. Eventually, as he grows more intrigued by Molotov Girl and the possibilities of where she might be heading, he obtains a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see what the actual players see in this world, which includes missions, medical kits, hubs, and other things that will be familiar to modern gamers, even if some of the technology here is already looking dated. (Note: Incorporating actual gamers and streamers like Ninja, Pokimane, and DanTDM into the film was a brilliant move that will have kids who are familiar with their personalities jumping out of their seats.)

Back in the real world, we learn that Molotov Girl is actually a programmer named Millie, who used to collaborate with another tech genius named Keys (Joe Keery) on the development of a truly ambitious virtual game, one that would replicate the real world rather than simply requiring gamers to complete violent missions. Her investigation into whether the game’s egocentric publisher Antwan (Taika Waititi) stole her code and deformed it into this bland experience takes her to “Free City,” where she meets Guy, who turns out to be the ideal inside man for the job. Using Guy’s adamant refusal to raise his rank through violence, Guy and Neo form an alliance to essentially tear “Free City” apart from the inside out. Guy only chooses the positive missions in the game, and as a result, he becomes an internet sensation as the world tries to figure out who this mysterious gamer might be, completely unaware that he is actually the most remarkable breakthrough in artificial intelligence in history. As Millie and Keys learn more about what has been accomplished here, they make it their mission to protect true advancement from brash capitalism.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Free Guy quiz.

In the first half, director Shawn Levy does an admirable job of keeping “Free Guy” moving and humming along with several entertaining scenes, including a great montage of Guy’s “good” missions and a funny sequence in which Keys and his programming partner Mouser (Utkarsh Ambudkar) go after Guy, but he starts to lose the plot’s momentum around the hour mark, circling back to a number of the same plot points and themes. More than anything, the film struggles to distinguish itself from other projects such as “The Matrix,” “Ready Player One,” and even “The Truman Show” while also dropping in real-world gaming and pop culture references on a more frequent basis. The film’s best moments show off the potential of this concept, while its worst moments appear to be emulations of better films.

In addition, Levy keeps the most exciting parts of “Free Guy” moving by bringing out the natural charisma of his cast members. Reynolds can pull off this type of endearing action hero in his sleep, but Comer is a genuine breakthrough, charismatically holding together both the action-packed scenes as Molotov Girl and the more character-driven scenes as Millie in a single performance. She is without a doubt the best thing about the film, although it is nice to see the affable Joe Keery get his best film role to date as well. The unfortunate thing is that both cede a little too much screen time to an overacting Waititi in the second half of the film, who repeatedly hits the same unfunny beats, and who ultimately ends up feeling more cartoonish than the actual NPCs in the film.

At every point in the season when “Free Guy” threatens to become mind-numbingly repetitive, a decision by writers Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, or one by Comer or Reynolds, brings the show back into focus. “Free Guy” is a more disposable film than it should have been, but it is still a pleasant diversion. Gamers frequently use virtual worlds to get away from their real-world problems. It’s entertaining to watch the journey go in the opposite direction.
