“Game Night,” a raucously funny film about a group of game-loving partygoers who become entangled in a web of danger, is a film that has a knack for pushing the boundaries of nastiness to the extreme. Writer/director Mark Perez collaborated with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who co-wrote “Horrible Bosses” and “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” and directed the 2015 film “Vacation.” It starts out borderline ludicrous and builds on the absurdity until it leaves our world and becomes an exercise in absurdity.

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams’ main characters, Max and Annie (Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams), host a regular game night in their suburban home. It is demonstrated in a cleverly edited opening sequence that games such as Pictionary, Scrabble, and charades are at the heart of their relationship and ultimately led to their marriage. The characters in this film include Ryan (Billy Magnussen), an obtuse friend of Annie’s; Sarah (Sharon Horgan), Ryan’s much more intelligent date; the husband-and-wife team of Kevin and Michelle (Lamorne Morris and Kylie Bunbury); and Max’s estranged brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler), who is a success in ways that Max can only dream of. The film is directed by Kevin McKidd and stars Lamorne

“Game Night” then transforms into a roller coaster ride as Brooks invites the guests to his wealthy home for an entirely different kind of game night, modeled on those murder mystery dinner parties that have become popular in recent years. The audience is whisked through broad slapstick, deadpan exchanges, and imminent threats that occasionally erupt into mayhem.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Game Night quiz.

As part of a home invasion that everyone else believes is just part of the game, Brooks is kidnapped and threatened with murder unless the others deliver a valuable Faberge egg to a terrifying mastermind who is giving them orders from afar. All of the other members of the team break up into pairs and each attempts to solve the mystery in their own way, with their paths occasionally re-crossing only to diverge once more.

Game Night Quiz

As with “The Game” and other films where an escapist adventure turns weird and frightening, you’ll anticipate some but not all of the twists and turns in “Game Night,” and you’ll appreciate the way that the screenwriter and directors tie them to the psychology of the characters and structure the film as both a personal journey and a journey of narrative discovery. “Game Night” is a film about a group of friends who go on an escapist adventure that turns weird and frightening. As in “The Game,” the brothers’ mutual resentment and rivalry is almost as important as it was in this episode. Additionally, the inability of Max and Annie to conceive a child is brought into play, as are the psychologies and pasts of the other game night participants. In a subplot about Kevin’s obsession with determining whether Michelle has ever been unfaithful to him, there is a fantastic payoff that completely turns the movie around. In addition to the main characters, there are some juicy bits for the supporting players, including Jeffrey Wright as an FBI agent, Danny Huston as a decadent rotter (his specialty), Michael C. Hall as the terrifying criminal known as The Bulgarian, and Jesse Plemons as the divorced and seemingly personality-free cop who lives in the same cul-de-sac as Max and Annie and seems obsessed with getting invited to game night again. None of these characters are quite what they appear to be at first glance or on second thought.

“Game Night” is a nearly perfect form of entertainment for adults over the age of a certain number of years. In between the madcap car chase and the violent incident that leads to impromptu surgery, and the house party that has echoes of the masked spectacle in “Eyes Wide Shut,” there’s commentary on aging, disappointment, doomed romanticism, and sibling rivalry that weaves through the narrative. They do an excellent job conveying their emotions, particularly Bateman and McAdams, who complement each other’s thoughts so gracefully that it appears as if they’ve been married for eons, and Plemons, who steals every scene he’s in with his subtle underplaying. And, while there are a few heartwarming moments, the film never tries to claim sentimental or revelatory power that it does not have in the first place.

About the quiz

Control of tone is critical in any film that does not follow a well-established formula, and fortunately for the audience, Daley and Goldstein are on top of their game throughout. When they’re not sure how far is too far, they’ll push all the way up to the border and then stop just a toe or two over the line. The understated cartoonishness, which is anchored in Bateman and McAdams’ collaborative effort, contributes significantly to the film’s success. Throughout the game, characters sustain physical injuries that would kill or incapacitate them in real life, only to bounce back and continue playing. However, their misfortunes are calibrated so that they only appear to smack them in the face with a bit of sense, like an exploding cigar or an anvil on the head in a Bugs Bunny short. This is one of the best surprises of a still-young film year: a comedy that takes itself and its audience completely seriously except for having a good time. Also, you must try to play this Game Night quiz.
