Rhett and Scarlett at the fundraising performance Scarlett O’Hara resides at Tara, her family’s cotton estate in Georgia, with her parents, two sisters, and their numerous black slaves in 1861, on the eve of the American Civil War. After the Battle of Gettysburg, the war’s momentum begins to shift against the Confederacy. In Scarlett’s town, many of the males are killed. Eight months later, Melanie gives birth with the assistance of Scarlett as the Union Army besieges the city as part of the Atlanta campaign, and Rhett assists the family in escaping the city.
