“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” directed by James Gunn, begins with a credit sequence that establishes the franchise. While an incredibly expensive CGI battle takes place in the background, the camera remains focused on an adorable Baby Groot who is dancing to ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” in the foreground. This is a series that is more concerned with whimsy, excitement, and family than it is with “things that go boom,” and that is what really distinguishes it from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the present time. In keeping with the straightforwardness of its title, “Vol. 2” picks up relatively soon after the conclusion of the first film. Even though Groot is still a baby, the other four Guardians are on a mission on behalf of an alien race known as the Sovereigns, who are led by a beautiful golden woman named Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). When a monster known as the Abilisk attacks, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Baby Groot must band together to protect a valuable collection of batteries from the monster. They agree to do so in exchange for a prisoner held by the Sovereigns, Gamora’s evil sister Nebula, who is being held by the Sovereigns (Karen Gillan). The mission goes off without a hitch, but Rocket steals the batteries on the way out, prompting a whole race of people to set out in search of the Guardians and their batteries.
Yondu (Michael Rooker), the blue-skinned Ravager who raised Peter, is hired by Ayesha to exact vengeance on the Guardians. However, there is some disagreement among the Ravagers about hiring Yondu. Yondu has been effectively exiled from his own people, for reasons that will become clear later, and his crew is beginning to consider mutiny as a result, particularly given his reluctance to track down and capture Quill. Meanwhile, Quill finally meets his father, a Celestial named Ego, who is expertly played by Kurt Russell in a smooth and effortless performance. Star-Lord eventually finds himself torn between his biological family and his makeshift family with the Guardians, in ways that I will not spoil.

“Vol. 2” is full of references to family, which, like Dom Toretto on a confessional bender, appears over and over again. However, the competitive sibling dynamic between Gamora and Nebula is also explored in this volume, as is the adoptive father relationship between Yondu and Peter. The Guardians, of course, are the ultimate “family,” just as they have been in so many superhero group films before them. This is something Gunn emphasizes far too often in his writing, but he mostly handles the issue of family being more than just biological relationships in a way that gives these films an emotional backbone that other superhero films do not possess.

Because the “family” is given nearly equal development and screen time in this adventure, it is extremely beneficial. Even though it would have been easy to push Pratt to the front of the stage and place the entire action of the film on his shoulders, every member of the Guardians feels more fully developed than they did in the first film, which was hampered by origin/introduction arcs. Even characters like Gillan and Rooker, who could have been merely supporting, are given surprising depth by the underrated Saldana. Bautista gets more big laughs than any other MCU character as the big guy with no social filter. One of the things that is most pleasantly surprising about “Vol. 2” is that Gunn doesn’t put any emphasis on his own commercial success in the process. On so many levels, this franchise is too big to fail, and it could have easily been cheated by calling in sick. Despite this, Gunn and his team create some of the most visually arresting sequences in the entire MCU. From the Sovereigns’ “battle room” to the entirety of Ego’s planet to the grungy functionality of the Ravagers’ ship, there are some fantastic pieces of production design to be found throughout the film. It is clear that Gunn and cinematographer Henry Braham are not taking their billion-dollar sequel’s visuals for granted, as they find beauty in shots that many other filmmakers would pass over. “Vol. 2” has a surprisingly good look to it.
