A young dog (played by Layla) is found lost on the platform of the railway station in Bedridge, and Parker Wilson (played by Richard Gere), a professor who travels to nearby Providence, Rhode Island, briefly takes it home. (The audience sees that it was freighted by a Japanese monastery and that the tag of its basket was torn in transit.) The dog is still unclaimed, but as Parker carries it everywhere with him, they become more and more attached. Ken, a Japanese acquaintance of Parker’s, informs him that the dog is an Akita breed and that the collar tag’s character is “Hachi.” (“Eight” in Japanese-language). Parker names the canine “Hachi” as a result because it is a fortunate number. Even though Hachi sleeps outside in his own shed, Parker’s wife Cate Wilson (played by Joan Allen) gradually warms up to him. Parker attempts in vain to teach Hachi how to do typical dog exercises like fetch a ball in the meantime. Ken informs him that Akita dogs cannot be trained and that there will be a specific reason why Hachi will retrieve the ball. Hachi appears in the family wedding picture when Parker’s daughter Andy (played by Sarah Roemer) marries Michael (played by Robbie Sublett). Andy makes her pregnancy announcement shortly after the wedding. A mature Hachi (played by Chico) climbs under the fence one spring morning and pursues Parker to the train station. Parker misses the train because he won’t take the bus home. He gives him to Cate and boards the following train. He gets off the train at 5:00 and is shocked to see Hachi waiting for him at the stop. The fact that he arrived at the train stop by himself astounds him even more. Hachi, however, acts strangely at home one winter morning and then pursues Parker to the train station while carrying the ball. Parker lobs the ball in his direction, and to his joy, Hachi successfully retrieves it for the first time. Parker eventually puts the ball in his pocket and starts to depart after they have played for a while. Hachi growls continuously as she observes Parker’s train depart. Parker has a fatal stroke hours later and collapses in his classroom while still clutching the ball. Hachi is waiting for him at the train station. Michael arrives at the train station at 9:30 pm and drives Hachi home. Hachi observes the family grieving for Parker from his shelter. The following morning, Hachi travels to the train station to wait while Parker’s friends and family gather for his funeral. Soon after Cate sells the property and vacates, Hachi moves in with Andy, Michael, and their young boy Ronnie. Hachi, however, travels to Bedridge along the railroad lines. After finding him and bringing him back to their home, Andy eventually realizes that Hachi is missing Parker and unlocks the gate for him. Hachi runs back to the Bedridge train station after licking her palm. Now, every day at the train station, Hachi waits to be fed by Jasjeet, a vendor of hot dogs, and other bystanders. A reporter soon publishes a story about Hachi, and soon after that, he receives gifts and cards from people. After reading Hachi’s news, Ken leaves for Bedridge and tells him in Japanese that he misses his best buddy. Ken is there when Cate visits Parker’s grave on the tenth occasion of his passing. She is moved to see an aged Hachi (Forrest) still waiting for his owner at the train station. Later, Cate shares a tale of Hachi who gradually finds his position with 10-year-old Ronnie. Flashbacks of Parker and Hachi together are shown to the audience, and the final passenger stops at the station’s entrance. Parker yells “Hachi!” and the dog jumps up, comes running to him, and they hug. While waiting for Parker, Hachi lays dead at his desk at the train station as the camera pans up to the night sky.
