“Half Brothers,” a novel by Luke Greenfield, is a tale of two stories. The title of the film is derived from a song in which two half-brothers who couldn’t be more different meet for the first time when their father is on his deathbed. Due to the fact that this is a comedy, disaster ensues. Their father passes away unexpectedly, and because their father enjoyed solving puzzles, he sends them on a road trip through the Midwest in order to answer their questions about his life, including why he abandoned his oldest son Renato (Luis Gerardo Méndez) in Mexico. The other is their father’s dramatic and unpredictable story of an immigrant’s life, which leads him away from his family in Mexico and to the United States, where he establishes a family of his own. A complicated story, not only in terms of the way it comes together, but also in terms of the ethical, emotional, and financial dilemmas that it presents.

Editor’s Picks

With a young boy and his cool father, Flavio (Juan Pablo Espinosa), the film opens in the mid-’90s, with the two of them happily engaging in mischief and flying airplanes. However, when the economy begins to tank, Flavio flees to the north and never returns, leaving a young boy to grow up filled with resentment and anger. Having reached adulthood, Renato is a caustic individual who has no friends—yet he has managed to find himself a fiancée who has a young son of her own. An unexpected phone call from his dying father’s new wife brings that rage to the surface, but upon arriving in the United States to say goodbye, he instead finds out that he has an annoying half brother, Asher (Connor Del Rio), and that he must now solve his father’s final riddle in order to discover the truth behind his life’s story.

Flavio’s account of his journey to America in search of work is far more compelling than the boy’s squabbling on the road trip. He learns about a cruel immigration system, racism against Mexicans, and, at first, a lack of financial resources. In addition to this, he finds himself in positions of opportunity and the kindness of others. Because his sons are piecing together his journey, his story is told in stop-and-go segments, which is a shame. Sitting in the car with the half-brothers from the movie is nothing short of torturous, to say the least. They’re both difficult to deal with on their own, and together they’re even worse. Renato has all the characteristics of a low-grade sociopath, thinking only in cold, unfeeling logic and being unsympathetic to anyone he perceives to be less fortunate than himself. According to all accounts, Asher represents all of the most deplorable stereotypes about Americans. He’s entitled, rude, and lazy, and he doesn’t have a shred of work ethic to be found. He can talk for hours without saying anything at all. In a nutshell, he’s Renato’s polar opposite. However, instead of serving as comedic fuel, the Odd Couple-like pairing sputters to the ground. Espinosa and Del Rio have little to work with other than the bare bones of their characters’ personalities, and neither can really make their chemistry work.

About the quiz

Because of Flavio’s twisted scavenger hunt, the narrative begins with a strained premise, one that could have easily been reduced to a quick bedside confession were it not for Flavio’s twist on the traditional detective story. The story of Ali LeRoi and Eduardo Cisneros, which was brought to life on the big screen by Cisneros and Jason Shuman, contains few surprises for the brothers’ audience. They fight, they make up, they fight and make up again, and so on until the end of the world. Flavio’s side of the story is treated with a little more care, though the dots connecting the various threads of his story are a little disjointed at times.

Greenfield’s film pokes a little fun at the expense of the people on the other side of the border, and not without reason. A running joke amongst Renato’s friends is that he has to deal with the limited knowledge that Americans have of their neighbors, which frequently revolves around questions about ziplining. As a result, while “Half Brothers” provides some amusing moments, there are a few slapstick sequences that make little to no sense, such as why Asher drives 60 miles out of his way to steal a goat. There could have been many more clever scrapes and awkward conversations that would have elicited laughter from the audience without deviating so far from the plot’s intended direction. It’s a bumpy ride no matter which path you take because of the uneven story and characters in the film.
