Likewise, John Carpenter feels the same way. A merciless thriller, “Halloween” is a film so violent and frightening that I would compare it to the film “Psycho,” which is also a horror film (1960). Evil Personified is a terrifying and creepy film about a creature that one of the characters refers to as “Evil Personified.” Right. And this brings us to the one small plot point that I’m going to describe in detail. There’s this six-year-old kid who commits a murder right at the beginning of the movie and is sent away. His psychiatrist describes him as someone he spent eight years trying to help, and then the next seven years trying to keep locked up for the rest of his life. The individual, on the other hand, manages to get away. And on Halloween, he returns to the same town and the same street where he committed his first murder, only this time with a different victim. And, while the babysitters in the neighborhood call their boyfriends and watch “The Thing” on television, he returns to the scene of the crime.

Because “Halloween” is such a visceral experience — we aren’t just watching the movie, we are experiencing it firsthand — I’m not going to go into detail about what we’re seeing. It’s a little frightening. If you are not a fan of intensely frightening films, you should avoid seeing this film. When I saw it, I was reminded of the positive review I gave to “Last House on the Left,” another truly terrifying thriller from a few years ago. Several readers contacted me to inquire as to how I could possibly support such a film. The fact that I was supporting it was secondary to the fact that I was describing it: “You don’t want to be scared?” I said. It’s not there. Those filmmakers who make the effort to truly frighten us, who make a good thriller when a bad thriller could have made just as much money, deserve to be commended. Hitchcock is widely regarded as a master of suspense; to express disapproval of other directors working in the same genre who wish to scare us would be hypocritical.

It’s simple to create violence on the screen, but it’s much more difficult to do so effectively. Everyone who enjoys thrillers knows that foregrounds are essential, and Carpenter is uncannily skilled at using them in his compositions: “Foregrounds are crucial in thrillers.” Following the establishment of the situation, the camera moves to one side, and something unexpected appears in the foreground. Most of the time, it is a tree, a door, or a bush. Not all of the time. It’s also interesting to see how he portrays his victims. Every single one of them is an ordinary, everyday person — nobody is supposed to be the star, make a big scene, and walk away with an Academy Award. Because of this, the performances are even more compelling; the film is a slice of life that is meticulously depicted (in drab daylight and impenetrable nighttimes) before its human monster appears on the scene.
