Happy Death Day, a horror parody of the “Groundhog Day” model, begins with the Universal logo stopping and restarting while the company name is circling the globe. In a clever riff on the fact that audiences are aware of what they’re in for—a film in which the same events repeat over and over again—the film is titled “Repeat.” Aside from that, it represents the filmmaking team acknowledging their audiences’ awareness of the ridiculousness for which they have willingly paid money. “Happy Death Day” will never be quite as lighthearted as it was in the first place, and that is the film’s biggest flaw. It doesn’t appear to be having enough fun with its own ridiculous concept, but it also refuses to stage any set pieces that are truly frightening, allowing it to fall into a strange, bland void in the middle of the film. What’s worse, we get to see relatively indistinguishable counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, for example, get killed over and over again, putting a crimp in the meta-idea that a lot of horror films are basically like “Groundhog Day.”

After a night of excessive drinking, college student Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) awakens in the dorm room of a young man named Carter (Israel Broussard) to find himself in the company of a stranger. Carter has her dressed in his shirt and her pants are on the dresser, but we later learn that he didn’t take advantage of her drunken state, but rather brought her back to the house to make sure she didn’t choke on her own vomit “like Janis Joplin.” It goes without saying that in a film like “Happy Death Day,” this sort of character detail that should be considered common human decency means that Carter is the nice guy love interest.

Editor’s Picks

“Groundhog Day” riff: Tree returns to her sorority house after the “walk of shame,” and she comes across a number of things along the way that the filmmakers can easily repeat in their riff on the classic film. It all starts with a petition that she must sign; then it escalates to a hipster glaring at her from behind his sunglasses; then it escalates to sprinklers, car alarm, and a frat pledge passing out during hazing. I didn’t write anything down. All of these occurrences will be repeated a dozen times.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Happy Death Day quiz.

We also meet Danielle (Rachel Matthews), who is the sorority’s evil queen bee, and Tree’s roommate Lori (Ruby Modine), who has baked Tree a single cupcake for her birthday. Throughout the day, Tree experiences a variety of events, including arriving late to class, having a quick hook-up with her teacher/lover Gregory (Charles Aitken), ignoring calls from her father (Jason Bayle), attending a lunch meeting with her sorority at which a sister is fat-shamed, dodging college sports fans, and finally being murdered by a masked individual wielding a large knife. At that point, she awakens in Carter’s dorm room, and the whole thing starts over again for her.

Of course, as with the logo, director Christopher Landon and writer Scott Lobdell understand that you are well aware of what you are getting yourself into, and so they introduce their suspects very carefully and somewhat cleverly on the first day. Is it the snarky sorority girl from across the hall? What about the reserved roommate? Which is more important, the older man or his wife? Is there anyone else we notice on the first day? The majority of viewers will start playing the guessing game right away, and this is where “Happy Death Day” begins to fall apart completely. Pretty quickly, you’ll realize that there are no hard and fast rules to this nonsense, and that attempting to get ahead of it will only make things worse for you. Unfortunately, it does not come together in a satisfying manner like “Scream” or any of the other great meta-movies that played with the expectations of their audiences. Instead of “wow,” it’s more of a “huh, okay,” and it’s on the verge of becoming “wait, that doesn’t make sense.”

I also didn’t realize the film was written by a man until after I finished watching it, but I was aware of it. Young women on college campuses are depicted in the film in a rather superficial manner; they get drunk, sleep with older men, and fight in sororities, to name a few stereotypes. Again, if these elements had been used as parody or in a more general context, they might have worked. Instead, they simply create a world that doesn’t feel believable, one that is filled with cliches from the world of college life. When Tree awakens at Carter’s, he finds posters for films such as “Repo Man” and “They Live,” among others, adorning the walls. An effective horror film should constantly draw attention to itself as a film and its place within the horror genre. It should wink while it scares and thrills the audience. It does none of the things listed above. It’s uninteresting and surprisingly predictable.

About the quiz

However, I must point out that Rothe, who appears in every single scene of “Happy Death Day,” gives her all to this film. That she’s quite good in a way that makes me eager to see what she does next is a result of the physically demanding nature of the performance. Her performance is without a doubt the most memorable aspect of the film, as she goes through nearly every emotion possible during her monotonous day. Moreover, as the film demands more of her in the traditional scream queen sense as the action becomes more intense, she performs admirably. If anything, you wish she was in a better movie because she is that good. It’s a wish that I found myself expressing over and over and over. Also, you must try to play this Happy Death Day quiz.
