The action-packed, full-length video game “Hardcore Henry” is a phenomenal beat-em-up that is almost entirely played out from the first-person perspective of the protagonist, Henry. Bricks, knives, grenades, and many different types of firearms all find their way into Henry’s arsenal as he battles a group of mercenaries who have Henry’s wife, Estelle (played by Haley Bennett), in their custody. Henry is a robotically enhanced amnesiac. Do we really need to experience his bloody, bad-tasting, kinetic adventures from his first-person perspective, which is designed to make us feel alienated? A quick response would be “not really, but so what?” “Hardcore Henry” is analogous to a good roller coaster in the sense that it does not call for a convoluted justification for its existence; rather, it simply is, it is enjoyable, and you ride it.

“Hardcore Henry” is a film that can be described as a cross between the first-person shooter video games known as “Call of Duty” and hyper-violent, semi-satirical action movies such as “RoboCop” and “Crank.” The over-the-top nature of the film is what draws you into watching it. The success or failure of the movie is determined by how effectively it can disorient, shock, and, more generally, undermine your sense of stability. So: not long after he is awoken and quickly debriefed by Estelle, Henry is chased out of an airborne laboratory by an evil albino businessman named Akan (played by Danila Kozlovsky). Akan is an ultra-powerful mob boss who has the ability to move things with his mind. Henry, a cyborg who has a robotic right arm and right leg, then runs around Moscow with the assistance of Jimmy (played by Sharlto Copley, who also starred in “District 9”), a mysterious benefactor who appears in the film as multiple clones of himself. Henry’s objective is never complicated: all he has to do is use a cell phone equipped with a GPS to locate his allies and supplies while simultaneously kicking a lot of butt along the way.

Now, you could argue that “Hardcore Henry” does not go far enough over-the-top to be a truly great midnight movie. A midnight movie is a film that you watch with your friends when your mind is most receptive to dark, trippy, and/or simply bizarre ideas. You could argue that “Hardcore Henry” does not go far enough over-the-top. For instance, a significant portion of the movie focuses on the concurrent homogenization and privatization of contemporary Russian security. This theme links Akan’s all-black mercenary stormtroopers with other private sector employees, who are depicted as naked prostitutes wearing blonde wigs. In a similar vein, a twist in the third act makes the audience complicit in their desire to believe something about Henry that is manifestly untrue or irrelevant. But, once again, this discovery is not given nearly enough weight.

More importantly, the action choreography, despite the fact that it is impressively bombastic, does not perform particularly well. The action sequences in the movie are comparable to mediocre musical compositions, which are occasionally livened up by a rowdy and constantly shifting chorus. When Henry moves around, it often feels like the uninspired build-up for the next splashy murder that he will commit, what with all of his running, kicking, and punching. When Henry faces off against an army comprised of Akan’s men, the song “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen begins to play in a later scene. This is highly suggestive. At this point in the movie, the audience, much like Henry, might be prepared to leave the theater. Then, however, Freddie Mercury begins to sing about how much he is enjoying himself and how he does not want the party to end in any way. After that, Henry injects two syringes worth of adrenaline into his thighs simultaneously. And with that, the action begins, lurching from place to place without rhyme or reason other than the blind imperative to move quickly from one cool-looking kill to the next. If nothing else, this scene demonstrates that the filmmakers behind “Hardcore Henry” are well aware of the genre of movie that they have created.

After all, who in their right mind would ever cast character actor Sharlto Copley in more than one role? His line readings here are extremely inconsistent, he has no emotional range whatsoever, and he has a tendency to emphasize every other line more than it should be (and never in an intuitive way). He steals almost every scene he’s in because you never know what he’s going to do, and that’s what makes him such a fascinating screen presence. The amateurishness of Copley’s performance is what makes him such a fascinating screen presence. Even though Christopher Walken was always a powerful screen presence and performer, he reminds me of Christopher Walken when he was younger. Despite this, there is a significant amount of Copley in “Hardcore Henry,” as Jimmy plays Henry’s guide through a world that is similar to a video game and is filled with senseless violence.

When almost every scene is comprised of action verbs like running, jumping, stabbing, and so on, there is no time or reason to question what motivates the actions in “Hardcore Henry.” This is because there is no time or reason to question what motivates the actions because almost every scene is comprised of action verbs. I’m not entirely convinced that “Hardcore Henry” should even be a thing, but if you bring some Dramamine with you and give in to the beating that you’re going to get from it, you’ll probably have a good time.
