“Hell Fest” is a mediocre film that makes a compelling case for increased slashing at horror theme parks in general. No one will believe you as you stalk your prey, the rent-a-cop authorities are inherently apathetic, and the jump scares are completely gratuitous in this situation. It’s the closest you can get to hosting a horror potluck without resorting to the cliche of “The Cabin in the Woods.” So why aren’t the six authors of this story able to have more fun with this premise as they would like?
It all starts with the film’s fresh meat, which is represented by six attractive college-age students who are giddy with excitement as if they are spending the night at Evil Disney. However, after a slightly bizarre credit-sequence nightmare, the script focuses more on their relationships than their personalities, with the exception of a few hairstyle changes here and there. The writers pass the time with 20 minutes of backstory that, aside from establishing who is coupled with whom, will be meaningless once the slashing begins. Natalie (Amy Forsyth), the woman who receives the most dialogue, is the primary target. She is attempting to work through a bashful crush on a walking blood bag named Gavin (Roby Attal) while hanging out with all of their friends at a park called Hell Fest, where the film takes place.
A true threat then purchases a ticket to Hell Fest, which includes our lame-duck slasher who fails to be frightening by constantly walking in slow motion and clenching his fist in the manner of the “Arthur” internet meme. He wears a mask that was probably once labeled “Definitely Not Leatherface,” and he is less of a disturbing agent of chaos and more of a tedious screen presence who plays with the already hazy concept of personal space that exists in a horror park environment. However, he contributes to the film’s personality, which is one of being barely menacing and always dragging its heels to get back to the simple pleasures of everyday life.

Natalie is terrified of a masked figure known as “The Other,” who stalks her and freaks her out while her friends don’t believe her. The film repeatedly reminds us that a horror theme park is an excellent place to make frightened people cry wolf, and this is something we should remember. And yet, we are only rewarded with sludgy scenes of terror, in which characters learn what is real and what isn’t before meeting their demise on the screen.

What about the location of Hell Fest? Because it’s such a dangerous place, there aren’t even emergency exit signs to warn you when you’re in danger. Hundreds of performers, spiders, and corpses are among the many labor-intensive sets that our protagonists must navigate. Apparently, someone in production thought that a train nearly running you over was worthy of being its own room, and it is precisely these kinds of outlandish ideas that will fail to save “Hell Fest,” which is more sobering than intoxicating. It should be surreal to be watching a horror movie inside a horror park, but aside from the topsy-turvy canted angles and constantly expressive lighting, “Hell Fest” is devoid of any truly terrifying moments, even when Tony Todd is revealed to be the park’s terrifying host.

A major flaw: the constant fake jump scares that the characters are subjected to only serve to soothe any initial nerves. And then the idea of having fun with the concept of real versus fake horror at the park doesn’t really pan out—when people realize that someone who is being stabbed in front of them is actually dead, it’s more awkward for us than it is mortifying for them. The fact that we can tell when something is real or fake takes away from the surreal nature of setting a movie within a medley of horror tropes.

Despite the fact that the scares in “Hell Fest” are never memorable, the film is gore-lite in a strange way that makes it seem like a self-important light-R that forgot to have fun (the relatively tame language and selective gore makes one think it used to have PG-13 aspirations). However, the concept has so much potential that it’s a shame it’s executed in such a rote manner.
