Sally Field’s presence in the modestly conceived but emotionally brimming “Hello, My Name is Doris” is like a beacon of beckoning human warmth just waiting to be treasured for those of us who really liked—nay, worshipped and adored—Sally Field even before she won a single Oscar. For those of us who really liked Sally Field even before she won a single Oscar.

The 69-year-old actress and former TV “Gidget” not only gets the opportunity to demonstrate that her exceptional comedic skills have not become any more rusty since the time when she was last provided with a worthy arena in which to display them. But the fact that Field is doing so in her first leading role in 20 years is on par with Lily Tomlin’s hardcore dominance of “Grandma” or Blythe Danner’s delicate command of “I’ll See You in My Dreams” as a cinematic event.

It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that her Doris is a somewhat spikier but no less sweeter invention in the mode of Charlie Chaplin’s Little Tramp. Doris is a 60-ish, never-wed office drone who spent her sheltered life on Staten Island with a fat, lazy cat, a demanding invalid mother, and decades of hoarded clutter. She even wears vintage clothing that was once donated to the Salvation Army but has since been reclaimed as part of the shabby-chic fashion movement as part of the vintage clothing category. We laugh at her foibles, applaud her small victories, agonize over her questionable choices, share her growth pains, and allow her to pull on our heartstrings because we care about her. In a culture that all too frequently devalues its senior citizens, the arrival of Doris is greeted with the same elation as the first crocus of spring.

Despite the fact that this independent film with a low budget was directed by Michael Showalter, who also shares writing credit for the film with Laura Terruso, the fact that the plot is somewhat less stable than Field’s decisions onscreen is of little consequence because, in essence, she is the movie. Not that there isn’t a parade of talented younger faces in the cast, including Natasha Lyonne (“Orange is the New Black”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”), Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”), and Beth Behrs (“2 Broke Girls”).

It also does not suffer from being a sort of gender-inverted version of “The Intern,” which featured Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway and was glossier and ultimately shallower than this film. “Hello, My Name is Doris” has a welcome rawness that derives in part from making do with fewer resources, in contrast to the mainstream material that De Niro improved by putting aside his usual short-fuse persona to become a gentlemanly fount of wisdom in some of his other films, “Hello, My Name is Doris” has a more authentic feel.

Field, who appears to be eternally young, challenges preconceived notions about her at an early age while simultaneously going through the stages of coming of age and midlife crisis. In the beginning of the movie, Doris attends the funeral of her mother, which is a traumatic experience that at first causes her anxiety but eventually paves the way for her to embrace new opportunities. This is made possible by a talk given by a self-help guru (Peter Gallagher makes a cameo appearance in the film and gives cheesy advice like reading “impossible” as “I’m possible”). They show up pretty quickly in the form of John Fremont, her company’s new art director who is roughly half her age and played by Max Greenfield, who, in a welcome departure from his role as Schmidt on the television show “New Girl,” plays a more likable and interesting version of himself. As they were crammed into an elevator together, John couldn’t help but smile and tell Doris that he thought her stylish glasses with the cat-eyes looked cool. That is all that is necessary to set off her romantic strings and jolt her into a sexual awakening.

About the quiz

Her attempts to entice the unaware John at work are unsuccessful, so she turns to the 13-year-old granddaughter of her outspoken friend Roz (an invaluable performance by Tyne Daly). Roz’s granddaughter assists her in creating a fake Facebook page so that she can virtually stalk him. After discovering that John is a fan of an electro-pop band called Baby Goya and the Nuclear Winters, Doris makes plans to accompany John to a performance of the band at a club in Williamsburg. Her unfiltered reactions prove to be a hit with the millennial crowd, who adopt her as a kind of mascot due to her neon yellow coveralls, tacky Vegas visor, messy ’60s beehive, and other eccentric attire and accessories. Baby Goya, who is played by Jack Antonoff of the band fun, beckons her backstage, tells her that she is “cool,” and asks her to pose for the cover of his upcoming album. Obviously, this is a stretch for the narrative, but it is still very enjoyable to watch. Unfortunately, it turns out that John already has a girlfriend. As a result of this turn of events, Doris resorts to doing things that are not in her best interest.

When Doris tricks John into reinflating the exercise ball she is forced to sit upon at her desk for a quick thrill or when she bounces around like a giddy dervish to her first exposure to electronica music, Field knows how to milk such scenes. For example, when Doris is first exposed to electronica music, she bounces around like a giddy dervish. But she truly excels at digging deeper, such as the quieter moment when she tells John about how her long-ago engagement that did not lead to marriage or the long-gestating outburst where she blasts her selfish brother and shrewish sister-in-law (Stephen Root and Wendi McLendon-Covey, both terrific) for taking advantage of her. Both of these moments are excellent examples of how she delves deeper into the subject matter.

Some people may consider this story about a wallflower who blossoms to be nothing more than a manipulative and twee fantasy. But for those of us who have faith in Field, we’ll be hooked by the time we say “Hello” to this movie.
