The Grinch is a miserable, lonesome being with a heart that is “two sizes too small.” He lives in a cave on a mountain to the north of Whoville, the happy and kind Whos’ town. The Grinch decides to stop Christmas from happening after fifty-three years of being irritated by Whoville’s loud holiday celebrations. He assumes the identity of Santa Claus and rides in a sleigh drawn by his dog, Max, to Whoville. The Christmas tree, all the gifts, and the food for the feast are all taken by the Grinch after he slides down the chimney of the first house on the square. A little Who girl named Cindy Lou interrupts him for a moment, but he conjures up a cunning ruse to get rid of her so he can get away. The Grinch pulls his sleigh to the peak of Mount Crumpit and is ready to throw all of the stolen goods into the depths after doing the same to the other Who homes. He anticipates hearing the Whos sobbing as dawn breaks but is astonished to hear them singing a joyful Christmas song instead. The Grinch’s shriveled heart enlarges three sizes as he finally understands that Christmas “means a little bit more” than just gifts and food.
