Shaye at long last gets her “more” with the release of “Insidious: Chapter 3.”

In the first two “Insidious” movies, which were surprise hits despite their low budgets in 2011 and 2013, her character, the veteran psychic Elise Rainier, was the most compelling figure in both films. She is front and center, and writer and co-star Leigh Whannell, who created the series with James Wan and directs for the first time here, makes a smart choice to put her there, and she is given plenty of room to shine.

Shaye, whose best-known roles prior to the “Insidious” franchise were in the Farrelly brothers’ favorites “There’s Something About Mary” and “Kingpin,” gets the chance to show an unusual amount of range for a horror movie heroine, ranging from sadness and vulnerability to strength and resiliency. Shaye is best known for her roles in “There’s Something About Mary” and “Kingpin,” which were both directed by the Farrelly brothers. She can convey the same amount of meaning with a sympathetic look as she can with a witty remark delivered at just the right moment. It is a pleasure to be able to witness such an experienced performer finally seize her spot in the limelight.

But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Insidious Chapter 3 quiz.
However, putting a smile on your face is not the primary objective of “Insidious: Chapter 3.” Its purpose is to freak you out completely, and it does so in a very convincing manner by including a number of intense jump scares. Whannell creates moments that are legitimately surprising and frightening approximately a half-dozen times, and one of the reasons for this is that he uses silence so effectively as a contrast. You’d be forgiven for thinking that we’d never seen a scary movie before the number of times that I jumped out of my seat and grabbed the arm of the critic sitting next to me. In fact, he did the same thing, but I won’t mention his name because I don’t want to give away our secret. Whannell’s imagery is just that thoroughly unsettling, and his pacing is just that spot on. He uses a few creative camera angles and movements here and there, but for the most part, he directs in a competent and understated manner.

However, there is a significant emotional undercurrent that runs underneath all of the scare tactics. You get a sense of the characters’ loss and grief by the time the story is over, along with a sense of catharsis and eventual resolution. This is not some cheap thrill-seeking game; there are actual stakes involved. Although “Insidious: Chapter 3” isn’t quite as consistently or suffocatingly terrifying as its two predecessors, it is more personal and melancholy than those films, and this may be a positive thing. It was necessary for the series to take a new turn rather than keep going in the same direction, and because of this, everything has come full circle.

Having said that, it is absolutely necessary to have watched the first two films in the series in order to comprehend why particular characters and the relationships between them are significant, who the various demons are, and how, if at all, these hauntings are connected to one another. You are free to start watching the third film at any point, but the experience might not have the same impact on you. This is due to the fact that “Insidious: Chapter 3” is a prequel that takes place a few years prior to the haunting of the Lambert family, which is led by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne’s characters who are tormented and terrified. It describes how Elise overcame a challenge that she had been struggling with in order to regain her mojo and become the fearless medium that we now know her to be.

Elise is asked to assist Quinn, a high school senior who is still grieving the loss of her mother, who passed away from cancer over a year and a half ago. Quinn is played by Stefanie Scott, a former cast member on the Disney Channel. Elise, who spends the middle of the day in her robe and slippers, maintains that she no longer engages in behavior of that nature, citing a variety of reasons that, in due time, will become painfully apparent. But out of compassion for this young girl who is going through a difficult time, she gives in to her request, despite the fact that she is all too familiar with the various malevolent spirits that the girl could contact instead.

It has come to light that the spectral presence that Quinn believes to be her mother is, in reality, a malevolent spirit with a murky history and nefarious plans for the future. (The appearance of sticky, dark footprints all over the place should serve as your first indication that something is wrong.) But ever since Quinn’s mother passed away, her entire family has been in a state of disarray and disarray, to the point where nothing makes sense anymore: her scattered father, Sean (played with borderline sitcom cluelessness by Dermot Mulroney), and Quinn’s bratty younger brother, Alex (Tate Berney).

A frightening car accident that leaves aspiring actress Quinn with two broken legs renders her even more helpless to the ghost’s advances; her immobility and her inability to protect herself provide much of the tension in this situation. Just like the rest of us, all she can do is watch and wait for the inevitable terrible events to take place, like something out of the movie “Rear Window.”

Therefore, Sean and Quinn make one final effort to contact Elise and beg her for assistance in removing this malevolent spirit from their house (a historic Hollywood apartment building rather than a charming and creaky Craftsman or Victorian). Simultaneously, Alex, the younger brother, has discovered a pair of self-styled ghostbusters who might be able to assist them through their YouTube channel. These self-proclaimed ghostbusters are Specs (played by Whannell himself) and Tucker (played by Angus Sampson), the bumbling and bantering duo who provided much-needed comic relief in the first two films.

The real excitement of the movie comes from witnessing Elise muster her inner fortitude in order to battle adversaries on all fronts in a variety of dimensions, some of which take place in lengthy apartment hallways that are carpeted and decorated in a “Shining” style. Whannell would be wise to let her demonstrate what she is capable of doing one more time if/when he decides to make “Insidious: Chapter 4.” She is easily the most fascinating person in the room, regardless of whether or not she is still alive, and she is the most capable person in the room.
