As much as the film tries to have its cake and eat it too, it fails miserably. Though the red velvet cupcake is delectable and enjoyable while you’re watching it, you’ll soon realize how hungry you are for something heartier after you’ve come down from your sugar high.
It’s about as high-concept as you can get: a woman who despises romantic comedies finds herself trapped inside one for the duration of the film. If you could give the entire elevator pitch in the time it takes to press the floor button for the floor you want, you would have plenty of time. However, with her trademark sly, deadpan delivery, the brassy Aussie Rebel Wilson, who has proven to be consistently charming and game for anything that comes her way, finds subtlety and sweetness within this broad premise. Isn’t It Romantic should have taken even more chances with her, and should have given her more opportunities to do the same. She is raunchy but tender and easy to root for—so much so that you’ll wish the film had taken even more risks with her and given her more opportunities to do the same.
Wilson finds herself at the center of a difficult balancing act in the film directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (“A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas”) and written by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox & Katie Silberman, and starring in the film. “Isn’t It Romantic” is a romantic comedy that both mocks and embraces the many, many clichés that have become synonymous with the genre. It is well aware that these films are pure formula, and it makes fun of that formula in a variety of amusing ways, including overt references to predecessors such as “Pretty Woman,” “Notting Hill,” and “13 Going on 30,” among other films. However, by the time it’s finished, it’s also pretty much delivered the exact same formula with genuine enthusiasm, making the entire exercise feel like a pointless exercise in futility.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Isnt It Romantic quiz.
It’s a difficult feat to accomplish, no matter what genre you’re in. It was achieved admirably by Edgar Wright with his Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy of “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “The World’s End,” all of which were released in 2001. This film relies primarily on Wilson’s likeability and the power of recognition to get by: an overused song, some hackneyed character traits, an old-fashioned narrative device or a neat way of wrapping things up in order to achieve a happy ending, and so on. However, every now and then, it has something to say about what is problematic about these well-known film tropes in particular. Why does the heroine have to have a flamboyantly gay BFF all the time, and why does he seem to have no life of his own apart from her? Why is it necessary for her to have a female office rival who despises her for no apparent reason, when they should be collaborating to bring down the patriarchal system?

There’s some food for thought sprinkled throughout, but “Isn’t It Romantic” is primarily concerned with serving appetizing, bite-sized nibbles.

Although Wilson is only a young, single woman living in a run-down New York apartment and working as an architect at a firm that doesn’t seem to care about her, she gives it her all as Natalie in the film. All, that is, with the exception of her work colleague Josh (Wilson’s charming “Pitch Perfect” co-star Adam Devine), who clearly has a thing for her while keeping his feelings for her bottled up inside. Her commute home from work is interrupted by a mugging on a subway platform, where she suffers a concussion and is rushed to the hospital. All of a sudden, the world around her has changed completely. It’s a wonderland of aesthetically pleasing lighting and flirtatious physicians. Flowers and cupcakes can be found in abundance. Laura is surrounded by a lavender scent on the busy streets of New York, and the tinkling piano of Vanessa Carlton’s catchy song “A Thousand Miles” follows her wherever she goes. Her irritated next-door neighbor has transformed into a stereotypically wisecracking gay man who enjoys watching makeover videos on YouTube (Brandon Scott Jones, who gets plenty of zingers). And, in one of her most astute observations, Natalie has moved into an impossibly spacious, chic apartment with an insane amount of closet space for her extensive shoe collection—the kind of real estate that only a select few people could realistically afford at the time.
About the quiz
Yes, she has moved into a romantic comedy, which is exactly the type of film she has long despised. With this and “What Men Want,” our heroine suffers a head injury and wakes up in a different life for the second time in as many weeks, for those of you keeping track at home.

Identifying the life lesson Natalie must learn in order to resume her normal life is Natalie’s primary objective. But she still finds time to indulge in her fantasies, which include a whirlwind romance with a wealthy, hunky real estate developer (an earnest and goofy Liam Hemsworth) that includes a candlelight dinner on his yacht and a helicopter trip to the Hamptons, among other activities. A chuckle can be had at their first kiss, which occurs in the middle of a busy street, where the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building appear to be only about one block apart. Natalie’s eyes are naturally opened to what she’s been missing all along by Josh’s own out-of-this-world love affair with Priyanka Chopra’s impossibly beautiful and glamorous swimsuit model/yoga ambassador—the kind of passionate relationship that naturally opens Natalie’s eyes to what she’s been missing all along.
The film concludes with a mad scramble to make some last-minute, very public declarations of love, which is followed by a second dance number when the first exuberant one would have sufficed perfectly well by itself. After a while, it all feels like an overkill, and the film only lasts 90 minutes (and couldn’t have sustained its central gimmick for much longer than that). However, your face will hurt as a result of your exuberant smile, and you may even experience a toothache as a result of it.
