A young lady named Chrissie Watkins goes ocean skinny dipping one evening during a beach party in the New England beach town of Amity Island. She is being pulled under the sea by an unidentified force as she is treading water. Her partial bones are discovered the following day on the shore. Police chief Martin Brody chooses to close the beaches after the medical examiner determines she was the victim of a shark attack, but Mayor Larry Vaughn convinces him to change his mind out of concern for the town’s summertime economy. When a shark kills a young boy named Alex Kintner in front of a crowded beach, the coroner grudgingly agrees with the mayor’s theory that Chrissie was killed in a boating accident, and Brody reluctantly accepts their conclusion. An amateur shark-hunting frenzy is sparked by a shark bounty, and eccentric and worn-down local expert shark fisherman Quint offers his skills for $10,000. By evening, Hooper and Quint are sharing stories about their various scars while inebriated, and Quint confesses that he survived the attack on the USS Indianapolis.
