This year’s Toronto International Film Festival saw the premiere of Taika Waititi’s anti-hate satire “Jojo Rabbit,” which garnered critical acclaim and earned the coveted TIFF Grolsch People’s Choice Award, cementing its position as a significant Oscar contender. Despite the fact that I believe it is far too early to begin playing the “Oscar Guessing Game,” it should be noted that several films that have won the TIFF audience award in recent years have gone on to receive Oscar nominations or wins, including “Green Book” (2018), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017), “La La Land” (2016), “Room” (2015), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “12 Years a Slave” (2013), and “Sil (2008).

Despite the fact that critics, including our own, were divided on “Jojo Rabbit,” Waititi’s evisceration of prejudice and his touching portrait of human connection between people of different religions are timely and may just serve as a cautionary tale to younger audiences about the horrors of religious intolerance. Newcomer Roman Griffith Davis portrays the titular youngster in World War II-era Germany, who has an imaginary buddy in the character of Adolph Hitler (played by Roman Griffith Davis) (played with irreverence by Waititi). Jojo’s admiration for Nazis begins to wane until he encounters a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie, “Leave No Trace”), who has been hidden in his attic for several months. Some people wonder if we’re ready for a buffoonish caricature of Hitler to be released. Waititi manages to pull it off with as much vigor and levity as can be expected of him. He is a comedian, after all, and his New Zealand take on many serious situations in the world is twisted in the style of an auteurist who has an original point of view. While giving “Boy,” director Taika Waititi’s 2010 feature picture, three and a half stars in his review, Roger praised the filmmaker’s humorous abilities, along with his ability to look with a clear gaze at the issues that young males growing up in a Maori culture face. Having received an Academy Award nomination for his short film “Two Cars, One Night,” Waititi has gone on to establish himself as the 21st century’s Mel Brooks with his uproarious and disarmingly sweet comedies, “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” which makes him an obvious choice for a “Springtime for Hitler”-style satire. The director takes great pleasure in filtering American pop culture via his innovative and distinctively New Zealand-influenced perspective, and his recent mainstream mega-hit “Thor: Ragnarok” is no exception to this rule. He also appeared in the top-grossing film in the world earlier this year, “Avengers: Endgame,” and will soon be writing and directing the film “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

At the TIFF Tribute Gala on September 9th, I was joined by Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro in honoring director Taika Waititi with both the Ebert Director Award and the TIFF Tribute Award, which were both presented to him earlier in the festival. When Taika took the stage, he did what he does best: he used humor to deflect all of the attention that was being directed at him at the time. He used his Ebert Golden Thumb award and the TIFF award like Lego building blocks, piling one on top of the other. Then he mumbled a story about growing up in a small village in New Zealand, where he had to be careful not to unintentionally date one of his relatives. He then read from Meryl Streep’s speech instead of his own, before flipping the microphone up and down. In a Robin Williams-like manner, he was quite amusing. In addition, he has received the TIFF audience award as a prize. Also, you will find out which character are you in this Jojo Rabbit Quiz.

About the quiz

Although Taika’s performance will remain in my memory, one of the sweetest things that has ever occurred to me onstage will also remain in my memory from that night. Later in the evening, when David Foster was presented with a recognition award, instead of delivering a speech, he brought beautiful singers on stage and played the piano while they sang songs by Whitney Houston, who happened to be Foster’s colleague and client. As a result, when I gave my speech, I mentioned that it would be more effective if David Foster played the piano in the background. So imagine my amazement when he ran up the stairs and settled himself at the piano and began to tap out a melody when I called for him to come up onstage and perform. Everything about it was so light and lovely, and the look he gave me was so giving and encouraging! When I demonstrated that I was unable to sing, he gently stated, “I will play while you speak.” And then he actually did it! It was so beautiful that I had the impression that we were surrounded by a blanket of white light. The only way I can express it is like follows: Thank you so much, David Foster, for your generosity.

The gala, which was hosted by TIFF’s Artistic Director and Co-Head Cameron Bailey and TIFF’s newly appointed Co-Head, Joanna Vicente, combined our award, which was renamed the TIFF Ebert Director Award, with several other honors, including the TIFF Tribute Actor Awards, which were presented to three-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep and three-time Oscar-nominee Joaquin Pheonix; the T The TIFF Impact Award for 2019 was also presented during the event to Participant Media’s founder and chairman Jeff Skoll and CEO David Linde, who were also recognized at the event. Awarded to actress and filmmaker Mati Diop, who recently made history by becoming the first black female director to enter the Cannes Film Festival competition, the inaugural Mary Pickford Award, presented in celebration of United Artists’ 100th anniversary, went to a rising female talent in the industry.

The animated film “Jojo Rabbit” will be released in theaters on October 18th. Watch Taika’s complete acceptance speech in the video below…
