The people interviewed for “Kedi,” a documentary by Ceyda Torun about Istanbul’s teeming street cat population, are not experts, talking heads, or academics. Instead, they are everyday people. They are ordinary people going about their daily lives, interacting with the cats in their neighborhoods, and their comments are casually contemplative, spontaneous, and profound. In addition to caring for and feeding the cats, human beings also take pleasure in simply observing and interacting with them. They take note of the quirks, likes, and dislikes of each cat’s personality. They openly acknowledge the positive influence these cats have had on their own lives. I admit that I am a cat owner, but even I was taken aback by the power of the name “Kedi.” What was the source of all this emotion? The reason for this is that what Torun truly captures in her unexpectedly powerful film is kindness in its most basic form.

Istanbul is littered with cats, which can be found everywhere. Their favorite places to curl up are stoops, car hoods, and cafe benches, and they also like to sit on piers and in doorways. They scurry beneath tables at flea markets and leap on scraps outside fish markets in search of food. Torun’s film follows the lives of seven different cats, each of whom has its own unique routine and personality, as well as a unique life and routine. Knowing how sneaky cats are when it comes to their nighttime habits, tracking these beasts must have been quite a challenge. The footage is absolutely breathtaking. The film opens with a tabby cat stalking down a crowded city street with a purpose in mind, looking for food to bring back to her litter of kittens, which has been abandoned (stashed in a stairwell). In order to keep up with Tabby’s determined progress, Torun’s camera is placed low to the ground, on his level with the feline. Watching “Kedi” is similar to lying down on a skateboard that is moving quickly. Cats are cunning creatures, and if they don’t want to be found, they will not be found unless they actively seek it out. Torun, on the other hand, finds them!

Editor’s Picks

There’s one cat who hangs out at a restaurant near the water, where he keeps the mice under control. A hilarious night-vision sequence shows the cat creeping through a drain pipe with his eyes ablaze is included in the film.) One particular feline has taken over the area in front of a bustling café, fighting off intruders, harassing her “husband” (by pushing him out of the way so she can eat first), and chasing away the floozy cats who are competing to win his undivided affection. (“She’s the psychopath of the neighborhood,” one of the residents claims.) After spending the day cooking fresh chicken, one woman goes for a walk around her neighborhood, leaving food for the cats that have gathered to surround her. She claims that she is in a lot of pain, and that the cats are assisting her in healing. When a cat gets hungry, it sits outside a bakery and bats frantically on the windows, causing the bakery to close. Between cats and humans, there is a freeform style of communication that is used. They have to share the same space. Petting some cats is a true pleasure for them. Others are unable to stand it. When a man owns a textile store, he demonstrates that the cat who lives in his shop only enjoys pats that are rough on its backside. Pats on the back drive her insane. In one scene, he says, “she gets so much pleasure that she almost passes out,” and then there’s footage of her sprawled out on the floor, completely immersed in the sensations. The same cat comes to a woman’s window on a daily basis to pay her a visit. She lets him in, he strolls around, he eats, and then he clambers down the tree to get out of the way again.

Although the cats are the main focus of the film, “Kedi” is really a portrait of a community. Istanbul’s life, its diversity and beauty, its stores and waterfronts, its people are all reflected in Torun’s streets and alleys. There is no explanation as to why there are so many cats in Istanbul, or how they all ended up in the city (except for a casual comment from an interview subject). Political upheaval and turmoil are not addressed at all, despite the fact that there are alarming signs everywhere, rumbling beneath the surface of everyday life, which are ignored. One woman claims that it is extremely difficult to be a woman in Turkey, and that the cats in her neighborhood serve as a constant reminder of the positive aspects of being female. Several people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ruthless demolition of old neighborhoods to make way for high-rise buildings. Gentrification disrupts entire ways of life, and residents are concerned about this, as well as about the cats in their neighborhood. What will they do now? What will become of them is anyone’s guess. It is possible to live in a heartless world. Caring for one another and caring for animals may seem like insignificant matters, but Torun’s affectionate portrait of these cats—and the people who care for them—makes it appear as if it is the most important thing in the world to do so. A restaurant owner keeps a tip jar on the counter, and the money collected goes into a fund to pay for vet visits for the cats that hang out outside. Consider the implications of that. Her close-up footage of the cats is combined with transcendent drone shots of Istanbul in all of its moods and weather, which Torun captures on her iPhone.

What is it about cats that has people so intrigued? I’m curious if this is due to the fact that cats have an innate sense of separation from us. They are not adoring balls of unconditional love in the manner of dogs. They have a serious and dignified demeanor. They keep their distance from one another. They don’t put their faith in you right away. Perhaps it is the withholding aura that draws people closer to you. Perhaps this is due to the fact that cats do not wear their Need on their sleeves the way dogs do. If a cat trusts you enough to show you its belly in exchange for a pat, you know you’ve accomplished something worthwhile. It’s completely random if a cat shows up for food one day. What if it comes back the next day? You have been chosen by the cat. Residents of Istanbul who were interviewed for “Kedi” are aware of this, and they consider themselves fortunate.

It was while incarcerated in the lunatic asylum St. Luke’s Hospital for religious mania that the 18th-century English poet Christopher Smart wrote his most famous poem, “Jubilate Agno,” which is considered his most famous work. One section of the poem is a lengthy “consideration” of Joffrey, the poet’s pet cat. A favorite of cat owners not only for its insightful observations on cat behavior, but also for its pure appreciation of Joffrey’s cat-ness, Joffrey’s “self,” his cat needs and ways, the poem is also a favorite of cat lovers. I thought about it a lot as I was watching the incredible footage from “Kedi,” a film that shares Smart’s sense of wonder, fascination, and love for the subject matter.
