The challenge for me in writing a review of a stand-up comedy film like “Kevin Hart: What Now?” is that there isn’t a lot that I can tell you about the film. The films that fall into this category tend to have a straightforward and uncluttered aesthetic. There are cuts that cut between shots of the audience laughing uncontrollably and shots of the comedian roaming around the stage. At the Lincoln Financial Field venue where the recording of this film took place, I saw a man wiping tears from his eyes, which is a clear sign that he felt he got his money’s worth from attending the event. Shots of women in these movies, particularly shots of Black women, always consist of the same mix of posturing along the lines of “you know that’s right” and bemused looks at the inconsequential man she brought to the show.

The jokes are too good for me to tell you because I wouldn’t be able to do them justice. I could briefly discuss the choices made by the editor and the locations where the director places the cameras, or I could divulge information regarding the set design of the enormous stage where the comedian performs his act. But at the end of the day, the only thing that I can truly tell you that will be useful is whether or not I laughed hard enough for you to invest your time and money in it. You can deduce from the star rating that appears above that the jokes in “Kevin Hart: What Now?” are, in fact, funny enough to warrant a positive review. You shouldn’t miss it, especially if you’re a fan of the type of self-deprecating observational comedy that Mr. Hart is known for performing.

My work here is done. I am grateful to you, America! I pray that God grants you rest tonight.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Kevin Hart What Now quiz.

Um, hi. Me again. Thank you very much for enlightening me regarding something referred to as “a minimum word count.” The taskmasters here at Roger’s cherished website are strict but kind. Therefore, I need to think of something else that we can talk about. Because I have such goodwill for the stand-up comedy portion of “Kevin Hart: What’s Now?,” I didn’t want to mention the uninspired spy movie skit that opens this film because I didn’t want to harsh my mellow. However, here is where my mellow becomes harshed. Even though it features Halle Berry, Ed Helms, Don Cheadle, car chases, and faux-graphic violence that makes fun of Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer,” it is a chore to sit through the entire thing.

The films “Central Intelligence” and the remake of “About Last Night,” both of which are very good, demonstrated that Hart is a talented comic actor; however, he is not given much to do in this segment other than pass the time. Cheadle finds uses for the word “motherf—-er” that he did not employ as Miles Davis in “Miles Ahead,” and we are stuck watching Berry argue with Hart while an ominous onscreen countdown clock reads “20 minutes until showtime.” The late-night audience in Times Square, which I was a part of, became understandably antsy as we waited for the film that we had purchased tickets to see.

At least this skit is more seamlessly integrated into the film than the one that opened “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain,” which lasted for an excessively long amount of time. It has a better ending as well, with Hart being shot through the stage at Lincoln Financial Field in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, like a bullet through a hole in the stage. The crowd that is there to warmly welcome him is comprised of the greatest number of people who have ever been present at a stand-up comedy show. A shot taken from Kevin Hart’s vantage point reveals the otherworldly glow of thousands upon thousands of cell phones in the audience. This is just one example of how director Leslie Small gives us an idea of the scope of such an accomplishment. The positioning of Hart in the picture gives the impression that he is basking in the glow of his adoring fans while he graciously expresses his gratitude to them. The sincerity with which he expresses his gratitude to his fans makes it simple to comprehend the depth of their affection for him.

About the quiz

As for the jokes, Hart is more consistently on-target than in any of his previous concerts, which is saying a lot. Hart engages the audience both visually and verbally while being aided by a number of enormous screens that are staged. The projection on the screen behind him gives the impression that at one point he is perched precariously on the lip of a colossal lavatory bowl. He makes fun of his 5’4″ frame, which is a significant component of his comedy, by saying something like “This is actually what I look like in the bathroom.” At another point in the video, the screen transforms into a vast ocean with a single terrifying shark fin poking through the surface of the water. Hart makes use of the shark in an entertaining hypothetical argument in which his fiancée engages in line of questioning to which he cannot provide a credible response.

The comedian gets an unexpectedly large amount of mileage out of jokes involving shoulders and kneecaps, and he discovers a use for the word “really” that moviegoers will be quick to use after they leave the theater. In addition, he plays for laughs the not-exactly-stereotypical notion that people of African descent should “run first and ask questions later” when confronted with dangers of a natural or supernatural nature. It’s possible that a segment about the scary movie “The Conjuring” is the funniest thing Kevin Hart has ever done live on stage. He delivers a hilarious set that is both well-structured and precisely paced, and he does so while holding a massive gold microphone that is a sight gag in and of itself.

Kevin Hart is at the pinnacle of his comedic abilities in “Kevin Hart: What Now?” If only I had skipped the opening act like I do the previews, then I would not have wasted my time. This would have received an additional half-star if I had given it earlier. Your experience with comedic expressions may vary.
