The plot is said to have been inspired by specific instances in Lawrence’s own unhappy home life, and the author drew inspiration for the book’s locations from Nottinghamshire, where he was raised. Some critics claim that the tale was also influenced by Lady Ottoline Morrell’s affair with “Tiger,” a young stonemason hired to create plinths for her garden statues.[3] Lawrence made major changes to the text and plot while writing the book. Originally, he considered calling the book John Thomas and Lady Jane in reference to the male and female sex organs.[4] E. M. Forster’s posthumously released novel Maurice, which was reportedly read by Lawrence, was released in 1971. Although it is about a gay relationship, that book had an impact on Lady Chatterley’s Lover because it also featured a gamekeeper who fell in love with a member of the upper class.[5][6]
