Is “Logan” more powerful as a result of what the superhero genre has delivered over the last ten years, or is it just a coincidence? Is it considered both groundbreaking and classic because it does not have the feel of a modern superhero film, particularly those associated with the Marvel brand? Don’t be concerned. The flaws of the Marvel and DC brands will not be discussed here, but it is undeniable that the modern superhero movie has relied heavily on computer-generated imagery (CGI), particularly in the final acts, which consist almost entirely of apocalyptic explosions. So many of them have served as bridges between franchise entries that it feels as if you are constantly watching previews for the next film rather than being immersed in the film you are currently viewing. Instead of relying solely on computer-generated effects, “Logan” employs stakes that feel genuine and fight choreography that is fluid and beautiful. Most importantly, “Logan” features characters with whom you can empathize and care about their plights. It is not only “excellent for a superhero film,” but it is also excellent for any genre.

Despite the fact that it includes a scene in which the characters watch “Shane,” “Logan” has more echoes of late-career films for icons such as “The Shootist” and “Unforgiven” in terms of the way it deconstructs the line between hero and legend than “Shane.” Logan (Hugh Jackman) is a Western archetype, a gunslinger who has been forced to put his six-shooters away and try to live his days as routinely as possible in order to save his life. The Uncanny X-Men comics exist in the world of “Logan,” which means that Logan/Wolverine is similar to a retired sports hero or celebrity, someone who is well-known but who is no longer truly necessary to the plot. There are no mutants left in the human bloodline in the year 2029, which means that the aging Logan and the elderly Professor X (Patrick Stewart) are the last survivors of a long and storied history. Are they, or aren’t they?

Editor’s Picks

Logan is a low-key character who works as a driver when the film begins. After being discovered sleeping in his car, he is pursued by a group of tough guys who attempt to steal his tires. Wolverine is shot when he attempts to stop them; however, as we all know, bullets have little effect on him, and it only takes a few minutes before his Adamantium claws are slicing through skull and bone in ways we’ve never seen before. While “Logan” is the first R-rated adaptation of this classic character, Mangold’s approach to action is unlike anything else seen before in the Marvel film franchise. There is no longer any sense of hyperactive editing or wide overhead shots used to conceal the stunt and CGI work that was done. Throughout the film, we’re up close and personal with the action, which is often shot from low to the ground, more like a “Bourne” film than a superhero movie, and the emphasis is placed on fight choreography rather than editing. When it comes to the fight scenes, Jackman’s performance is smooth but also character-driven in the sense that Wolverine’s fighting style reflects the character’s no-nonsense approach. Additionally, “Logan” incorporates a couple of fantastic chase sequences later in the film—and once again, the action doesn’t feel like the film is stopping and taking a break for set pieces, as so many superhero films do—the action feels organic to the story and the characters, similar to “Mad Max: Fury Road” in that regard.

“Logan” has more in common with George Miller’s film than just action style; it also becomes a road movie when Logan, Professor X, and a mysterious girl (Dafne Keen) set out to try and find ‘Eden,’ a place where escaped mutants will be able to start over, which may or may not actually exist. While Logan is hesitant to admit it, he realizes that he has one more heroic journey left in him, and that this girl must be protected from a group of mercenaries pursuing them (an iteration of the Reavers from the comic books), led by a particularly nasty SOB by the name of Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook).

The acting is good, and Richard E. Grant does a good job chewing the scenery in the later scenes, but the real villain of “Logan” is time itself. In his later years, Professor X has developed seizures, and if you’ve ever wondered what happens when a telepath so powerful that his brain has been classified as a weapon of mass destruction develops seizures, you’re in luck: you can find out right here. He requires a sedative injection to stop a seizure from occurring, as well as medication to prevent seizures from occurring. He is well aware that he does not have much time left on this earth. Logan, who Jackman portrays as more of a man than a superhero in one of the best performances of his career, doesn’t fit either description. Logan is portrayed by Jackman as a man who has lost most of his friends as well as most of his sense of purpose, and who is reluctant to fight again. In that sense, it’s similar to late-career roles played by Wayne or Eastwood, where an icon is forced into action for the final time, but Jackman wisely chooses to focus on the humanity of his iconic character rather than the mutant abilities. It’s a truly outstanding performance.

Even though one can look back on “Logan” and pick apart the themes and philosophies of the film, it’s important to remember that it’s a viscerally exciting film to watch in the first place. In light of the comparisons to “Children of Men” and classic Western films, it is possible to conclude that this is an overwritten and overly intellectual film. There is nothing more false than this assertion. First and foremost, this is a fantastic action film in every sense of the word. The action scenes serve a purpose and connect with the audience much more powerfully than they do in most superhero films, which are frequently used as a way to show off the budget. When “Logan” bursts into action, it feels natural to the story, propelling the themes and characters forward, much like in James Cameron’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” another film that this one echoes in its road structure and its role as a protector for the next generation (as well as in another way that I will not reveal).

About the quiz

“Logan” is one of those rare blockbusters that has the potential to change the game. It will undoubtedly alter our perceptions of other superhero films as well as how the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe of films will be judged in the future. Please do not misunderstand me. Like everyone else, I enjoy a good popcorn superhero movie (perhaps even more so than most critics), but “Logan” demonstrates how far one can go in the genre if they simply approach it in a different way. It can be said that “Logan” is a deconstruction of the modern superhero film. It will be difficult to put everything back together again. Also, you must try to play this Logan quiz.
