It seems as though “Love and Friendship” was destined to happen. It’s one of those ideas that sounds like it was made up because it’s so perfect, like Wes Anderson announcing that he’s going to make an animated film about foxes based on a book by Roald Dahl. Whit Stillman adapting Jane Austen is one of those ideas that sounds like it was made up because it’s so perfect. Not only is it fantastic that he is doing it, but the fact that he is doing it makes certain aspects of his talent official. This is what makes it so wonderful. You could even say it’s a wonder that it didn’t happen sooner, or that, in his own way, he’s already been doing it for years. You could also say that it’s a wonder that it didn’t happen sooner.
Stillman’s films, which include “Metropolitan,” “Barcelona,” “The Last Days of Disco,” and “Damsels in Distress,” are comedies of manners. These comedies focus on educated, often hyper-verbal people who are oblivious to how ridiculous they sound (even when discussing Jane Austen’s “Mansfield Park,” as they do in “Metropolitan”). They seek out romantic partners who aren’t the right fit for them, put up with relationships that aren’t the right fit for them, and continue to be blind to the fact that better matches are standing right in front of them. Through the entirety of the story, the characters who are more brash or ambitious run roughshod over those who actually have manners. That also accurately describes a significant portion of Austen’s work, despite the fact that you might not necessarily be aware of it based on adaptations that place a greater emphasis on romance than comedy.
Stillman doesn’t make that mistake. “Love & Friendship,” a story about a scheming widow who tries to insinuate herself into a man’s life, is based on a relatively unknown and unfinished novella titled “Lady Susan,” which wasn’t published until after Austen’s death. The novella was written before Austen’s death but wasn’t finished until after her death. The majority of the time, however, Austen-isms and Stillman-isms coexist so deftly and gracefully with one another that it takes a moment to identify which author is most likely speaking through these characters. Stillman and Austen are both authors. It’s a film about watching people, but it’s also hilarious, and it just so happens to have some potential romantic pairings.

Lady Susan Vernon is played by Kate Beckinsale, who was so delightful in Stillman’s “The Last Days of Disco.” Here, Kate Beckinsale returns as Lady Susan Vernon, who recently lost her husband and is determined to find a new one for herself as well as for her daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark), whom Susan, to be honest, does not seem to appreciate or even like. Her intended victim is Reginald De Courcy, played by Xavier Samuel, whom she meets while she is at the estate of her husband’s parents. While Susan is circling the poor man like a hawk, she is also attempting to facilitate the union of Federica and the extravagantly thick-headed Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett), even though Federica does not particularly care for him. Susan is played by Tom Bennett. Alicia Johnson (Chloe Sevigny), a native of the United States who has made her home in England and has no desire to return to the United States, has been Susan’s trusted confidante throughout all of this. As the movie progresses and Susan digs herself deeper into a pit of manipulation, this appears to become a possibility that is increasing in likelihood.

Beckinsale has been given one of the most substantial roles in this film, and she makes the most of the opportunity to portray the complex and interesting character Susan. Her vitality is so enormous that it may bring to mind how underutilized she is in other contexts, namely how many roles she’s played that require little of her beyond posing and looking either beautiful or formidable. Susan is distinguished by her audacity, not only in her wants and desires but also in the way that she talks to other people, turning subtext into text in a way that the majority of people would not do unless the person they were talking about was in another room or another state. This audacity distinguishes Susan as a unique individual. However, they are right there in front of you! And they can’t wrap their heads around how astonishingly impolite and self-centered Susan is, most notably Reginald, who is portrayed by Samuel with great accuracy as a good man who is so shocked by Susan’s nerve that he can hardly bring himself to reprimand her because he’s too busy marveling at the fact that she even exists. Given that the novel is written in an epistolary format and summarizes events that Stillman had to intuit or flesh out into scenes, the film is more of a series of situations. Watching “Love & Friendship” is a little bit like watching a classic sitcom that doesn’t exist but happens to be based on Jane Austen. The direction, the writing, the photography, and the performances are what make it worthwhile to watch, in particular Samuel’s and Beckinsale’s, as well as Bennett’s brilliant turn as Sir James Martin, a grinching ninny who is so hilarious that you cannot feel contempt for him, only affection.
