“Lowriders,” a film by Ricardo de Montreuil, tells an age-old story of intergenerational conflict set in a very contemporary slice of Los Angeles, and it is a must-see. Even though they have more in common than they’d like to admit, fathers and sons are unable to communicate effectively. Old grudges simmer for a long time before finally bursting into flames. Parents, as the song says, just don’t get what’s going on.

You’ve probably seen these stories and themes a million times before, but the surprisingly fresh “Lowriders” features such strong performances from a well-chosen cast that you might not even notice. The script, written by Cheo Hodari Coker and Elgin James, brings these tried-and-true ideas to life through the development of well-developed, complex characters. Moreover, de Montreuil, in collaboration with cinematographer Andres Sanchez, creates an evocative sense of place and offers a glimpse into a part of the city that isn’t often depicted on film.

Editor’s Picks

It’s easy to imagine “Lowriders,” which is set in the mythical Mexican-American car culture of East L.A. and is richly, culturally specific in its depiction of the characters’ regret and reconciliation, ambition and competition, love and loss, being a film with well-deserved crossover appeal. The #family theme runs throughout the film, much like the ethnically diverse juggernaut that is the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Miguel Alvarez, played by Demian Bichir, is the patriarch of the Alvarez family and the owner of a Boyle Heights auto body shop by day. When he’s not fixing cars or cruising the streets with his lowrider crew of fellow old-timers, the Coasters, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. In fact, it’s more than just a way of life; it’s practically spiritual, and it’s how Miguel met Gloria (an excellent Eva Longoria who looks convincingly de-glammed), after the devastating death of his longtime spouse, in the film.

A graffiti artist, Danny (a handsome and likable Gabriel Chavarria), is Miguel’s younger son who pursues his own form of expression, which his father believes is unworthy of his time. It’s understandable that Miguel is concerned about the potentially dangerous and often illegal lengths to which Danny will go in order to share his art with the world. As a result, he is particularly concerned about his older son, Francisco (a charismatic Theo Rossi), aka “Ghost,” who has recently been released from prison after serving several years for stealing car parts in order to build and drive his own lowrider with his own crew.

The annual lowrider competition at Elysian Park, a hilly section above downtown that is also home to Dodger Stadium, will undoubtedly bring them all together for a big showdown. But, in the meantime, we get a glimpse into the daily rhythms of these characters’ lives, which is fascinating. Isabel (Montse Hernandez), Danny’s stepsister, is preoccupied with the question of what dress she will wear for her quinceanera. Chuy (Tony Revolori of “The Grand Budapest Hotel”), Ghost’s best friend, joins him on the adventure and tries to blend in with Ghost and his tough, older friends.

About the quiz

Daniel begins dating a white street photographer (Melissa Benoist, aka “Supergirl”), joining her for the monthly art walk in downtown and making awkward attempts to blend in with her pretentious friends. A particularly effective scene occurs when she places Danny in an economic box he does not want to be in while gushing over his work to the owner of a gallery; it stings, and when he chafes, we feel it as well.

Although the film’s emotional center is focused on Bichir’s character, who portrays an alcoholic in recovery who has made a slew of mistakes and has finally found the courage to admit them. Despite the fact that his performance is tinged with melancholy, he discovers in this man an unmistakably solid sense of pride. The exchanges between Bichir and the endearing but volatile Rossi maintain a constant sense of tension throughout the film.

There may be too much obvious dialogue in “Lowriders,” and the film may err on the side of over-the-top sentimentality at times. A genuineness and a fundamental truth underpin this family drama, as well as an appealing, low-budget scrappiness that consistently elevates it above the rest of the competition.
