Since the first book in the series by Bernard Waber was released in 1962, children and their families have enjoyed reading the tales about Lyle, the music-loving, scarf-wearing crocodile who resides on Manhattan’s East 88th Street. The vibrant visuals and upbeat plot of the book were nicely matched by an HBO Storybook animated feature with music by Charles Strouse (“Annie”). The Primms are made up of the math teacher dad (Scott McNairy), cookbook author mom (Constance Wu), and the Primms. The menacingly called Mr. Grumps (Brett Gelman) and his cat Loretta reside in the basement flat. He says, “She is not a cat. She has a silver-shaded Persian complexion and a very weak constitution. Grumps informs the Primms that he has attorneys on standby in the event that they disobey any community regulations, such as those pertaining to “noise abatement.”

With the help of excellent sound design, the CGI successfully avoids the common error of making heavy creatures appear weightless. The songs by Pasek and Paul are upbeat and happy, and they are accompanied by some fine needle-drop oldies like Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke” and a tasteful Elton John song. As the worried parents who each experience a liberating freedom after Lyle teaches them something new about their hobbies, McNairy and Wu are fine in their roles. The length of “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” makes it a little too complicated for a family film, and it falls short of the caliber of “Paddington” when it comes to film adaptations of well-known children’s novels.
